Education is one of the most important parts of human development. We start learning from the first seconds of our life and end with the last breath. The body's first normal reaction to unfamiliar things is fear. And this is normal, because otherwise our species would not have been able to survive for so long. The experience of fear is accompanied by a feeling of insecurity, inability to control the situation. However, fear also carries an adaptive function, forcing a person to look for ways to protect themselves.

On the other hand, curiosity is also an important feature that, together with fear, led humanity to the technological development that we have: The emotion of interest played an important role in human evolution, performing various adaptive functions throughout the history of its existence. Interest in the unknown forms the basis of research, cognitive activity and is essential for the processes of attention, memory and learning. According to McDougall: “The instinct of curiosity is at the core of most remarkable achievements of a person, since it is in that the origins of his/her/them scientific and theoretical activity ”.

Therefore, in our work, we tried to work on these emotions: Having fully explained to a person the mechanism of operation of a particular system, we give control over the situation - a person now knows where what is happening from and how it can develop in the future. But at the same time, we tried to give "interactivity" to whet curiosity - a person doing something with their hands or interacting with a lecturer will be more involved in the learning process than just listening.

Due to the limitations during the pandemic, we thought about the opportunity to tell what endometriosis and synthetic biology are remotely - such training does not require personal presence and can be continued at any time convenient for the student. To do this, we (Fiona, Polina and later Cecilia) decided to develop a game that could tell a story - we settled on a visual novel type of game, because we were limited in time by only 3 months when all the developers were on internships.

What problems did we encounter during development?

In fact, it is difficult to talk about endometriosis with adults and children because of the taboo of "free conversations about the human reproductive system" - it was necessary to explain it to the child quite gently, but at the same time in detail. We do not know if she / he / them had sex education (anatomy and pathology, the “panties” rule for primary protection against violence, sexually transmitted diseases) at school or if her / him / them were spoken to by their parents prior to playing the game.

Therefore, we decided to create a world in which organs, bacteria and proteins live in the same world and can interact with each other - sounds very familiar, doesn't it? The easiest way to create curiosity for the player - We have emphasized the characters "uterus" as the main ones so that the audience can talk about the female reproductive system and menstruation after the game.

image cascade 3

A part of synthetic biology has become no less important for us: the main character with which we lead the story is detective E. Coli (Escherichia coli benefits the host, for example by synthesizing vitamin K as well as preventing the development of pathogens in the intestines) E. coli plays an important role in modern industrial microbiology and biological engineering. E. coli is considered a universal organism for the synthesis of foreign proteins - we also used it in our project. In E. coli, researchers introduce genes using plasmids, which allows the biosynthesis of proteins for industrial fermentation.

We also created two characters that we can meet in the laboratory: these are our Crispr-cas proteins. We used them so that the laboratory for children was not separated and was as clear as possible - the proteins involved, as characters, explain why we need this or that stage of creating a detection system.

image cascade 3

The main plot of the game is the search for the missing "uteruses" by interviewing doctors, creating a biosynthetic tool for searching and using it, as well as talking about the experience of the disease with the missing after finding it. Each part of this process is based on surveys or bibliographies that we conducted during the project.

Testing is an important part of the development - for it we used the opportunity at one of the largest platforms for the scientific education of children and adults in France - CdS in Paris.

We wanted to make it easy to access for everyone. The archives were too heavy to upload to the wiki. So we decided to store it in the software repository so that it could be hosted on an iGEM platform, to be taken into account in the competition. The game is available in English and French for Windows, Linux and Mac. To download from the github, go to the corresponding folder on your computer and download the 3 archives inside. You can then extract the archive n°1 and launch the executable endoseek.exe. Have fun!
You can download it here :

image cascade 3

image cascade 3

Cité des sciences et de l'industrie
La Cité des sciences et de l'industrie is the largest science museum in Europe. The City of Science and Industry is the third most visited museum center in Paris after the Louvre and the Pompidou Center and the fifth cultural institution in France.

Last year, our team (iGEM GOPS 2020) presented a project on the territory of this center. Then our stand was a resounding success, so this year the organizers were happy to hear from us that we want to continue this tradition and come up with a new project. As in the past year, we called in other French teams (Paris Bettencourt, Evry Paris-Saclay, UParis BME, Sorbonne U Paris, Ionis Paris) so that more people could see that synthetic biology is interesting and useful on the example of our projects and our interest in explaining.

We participated over the weekend of the Science Festival, October 3 and 4, 2021. These days are designed to popularize science and provide an overview of new technologies and ideas through conferences, exhibitions and seminars for non-scientific audiences.

So we made an interactive presentation about “What is DNA?” for children. To do this, we allowed each participant to isolate DNA from kiwi fruit at a safe distance from other participants with their own sterile and safe reagents. Surface cleaning was performed after each participant. In addition to this general presentation, each team held their own master class and conference on various problems. We explained to people what our project EndoSeek means, why microRNA is a possible breakthrough in biology and how you can use it in our project thanks to the recently discovered CRISPR system, which turned the world of biotechnology upside down.

photo groupe cité 2

We also created a poster and talked about our project next to it during other master classes. It is important to note that thanks to the multinationality of our team, we were able to tell people about our project who ended up in this museum, but did not know French - and that was great! It was incredibly pleasant for people to see iGEMers speaking another language, who can explain the project that interested them.
Each person had to find an individual approach: depending on the level of knowledge of biology and chemistry (from young children to professors). Thus, our team has always found approaches to explain: analogies based on human experience or simplifications, explanations with the help of jokes how fluorescence works or important serious stories about safety in the laboratory from life.

photo groupe cité 3

We were also able to test our game - the audience consisted mainly of children aged 6 to 12 years. Naturally, for younger children it was quite difficult to read the game
- they lacked concentration, but at the same time they really liked the illustrations (I felt like I was a detective myself and E coli and I were partners! -I did not know that vaginas are so different!
- I have never heard of such a disease and now I will ask my parents if they know about it).

photo groupe cité 4

For older children and adolescents (10-16 years old), the game seemed interesting, but long. We understood them perfectly, as the game sometimes lasted more than an hour for the smallest children. At the end, they usually asked for more interaction and would like to have a look at the other journeys of this detective!
We also got feedback from teachers who tested the game during our exhibition, as well as some doctors. They gave us suggestions on the length of the game and the clarity of the explanations, especially the scientific ones. We also hope to receive more comments on the play store, in order to improve this game, which remains a fun and simple tool.

photo groupe cité 2

photo groupe cité 3

Conferences in high schools

The Lycée Louis-le-Grand is a public educational institution in Paris (France). Provides students with secondary and higher education. The Lyceum is located in the heart of the Latin Quarter. It was founded in 1563 by the Jesuit Order and was originally called the Clermont College.

This lyceum, known for its high level of education both in France and in the international arena, is surrounded by equally famous educational institutions such as the Sorbonne, the College de France, the Faculty of Law and the Institute of Geography. Education is free, selection is carried out on the basis of a competition. We did this presentation on 18 may.
We had the opportunity to give a presentation on what synthetic biology is and to interest mid-level students in synthetic biology and becoming a scientist associated with bioengineering. We talked about what IGEM is, what the Design Build Test Repeat cycle is, Biobricks and what we want to do during the project.

The TRACES association
In order to teach something to someone, you must always learn by yourself. Therefore, we turned to the association TRACES for help so we were given several training sessions, where they told us how to determine the importance of tasks for a project, and how to communicate with other people in order to convey our ideas. Actively acting in the education area, TRACES develops new methods of mediation with an approach open to interaction with the cultural and social environment, as close as possible to the expectations of various participants (public, organizers, researchers, experts, etc.).

They helped us in conducting brainstorming training on the topic Human Practices and taboo.
One of the trainings was conducted personally by Clémentine Bricout - events and exhibitions manager and scientific mediator for the TRACES Association. It was a great team training that was done offline with all the ways to protect yourself during the covid pandemic. We discussed with her how to present your scientific work and what aspects of the presentation are important for the speaker and the person who listens to her/his report or presentation.

L'association TRACES
