Safety
Lab safety
The laboratory in ATLATL Innovation center is classified as BSL-1 laboratory. Biosafety level 1 (BSL-1) applies to laboratory settings in which personnel work with low-risk microbes poses little to no threat of infection on people. Infection materials are also decontaminated before disposal, generally through the use of an autoclave. In addition, there is always an supervisor in the laboratory to ensure immediate response to handle any emmergency.
Experiment safety
Before we enter the laboratory, we all received a standard laboratory safety training:
Wear gloves and lab coat before the experiment
Pay attention to the positive and negative poles when putting the gel
When using the centrifuge, the solution must be placed opposite each other
Turn off the internal UV rays before using the ultra-clean workbench
Drinks or food is not allowed to be taken into the laboratory
In the laboratory inside the ultra-clean workbench, the alcohol lamp needs to be lit to ensure the internal sterility
Project safety
In our project, we only used E. coli TOP10 and E. coli DH5a, two bacteria which are harmless to human being and commonly used in bio- experiments. As for the function tests, two kinds of solution, tetrathionate and nitrate, would be required as the reaction substrates. In order to prevent risks from these two chemical compounds, our instructor would help to prepare these two solution and then we could conduct the function tests.
