Background

In 2002, China met an uninvited guest——SARS, a severe acute respiratory syndrome that had spread across South-East Asia and finally the whole world. From 2002 to mid-2003, 9 months were spent to make the outbreak under control. As of July 2003, global cases had reached 8,096 and deaths accounted for 9.6% (the number was 774) of the total cases. From individual aspect, this not only posed a great threat to our lives and health, but also hindered our work and life. Even severer, when we shift our sight to economy, with a loss of 210 billion yuan in China alone, the outbreak’s impact was catastrophic.

In September 2012, the first case of MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus) was reported in Saudi Arabia. Then the infection spread rapidly. Until May 25th, 2015, according to the data released by the World Health Organization (WHO), there had been a total of 1139 confirmed cases of MERS-CoV infection worldwide, including 431 deaths, with a case fatality rate of 37.8%. This kind of virus will cause respiratory failure as well as organ failure.

Just seven years later, in December 2019, a new coronavirus (which was nominated SARS-CoV-2 subsequently) was found in China. As of March 28, 2020, global cases surpassed 127 million and hence everyone were swept up in the vortex of the fighting against virus. The SARS-CoV-2 outbreak has had a huge impact on society. Economically, global loss had shrunk by 5.2% in 2020. Similar to the two virus mentioned above, SARS-CoV-2 had hindered people’s daily life severely. However, a noticeable phenomenon emerged-the outbreak caused severe psychological problems across the globe.

In addition to these three coronaviruses, a member of coronaviruses around us is always neglected: HCoV-229E. Actually, according to researches, almost all of us have been infected with HCoV-229E in our early childhood. HCoV-229E has a wide range of pathogenicity and can induce self-limiting acute infection and chronic persistent infection, (such as acute respiratory disease, enteritis hepatitis, encephalitis, chronic demyelination of the central nervous system and other diseases), which can lead to death in severe cases. Another study showed that 66.6% of respiratory tract infections were caused by HCoV-229E. According to a human trail, we can learn that its general symptoms are similar to catching a cold: fatigue, headache, runny nose, which always leads to our neglect.

Inspiration

In just 20 years, there have been no less than 3 coronavirus pandemics. Until now, the war against the SARS-CoV-2 has not stopped. As to the human-to-human infecting way, the similar symptoms to common cold, and most importantly, the serious harm to human respiratory system, it’s time for us to face the confronting enemy: coronavirus.

The main purpose of our team's project this year is to detect these kinds of coronaviruses and develop a multi-virus detection system. What we are doing is reviewing experiences, finding out the similarity of various coronaviruses, and subsequently increasing the detecting efficiency. So, someday when facing a new kind of coronavirus outbreak, just with several simple improvements, our system can be an ideal assistant for people to learn, prepare, take actions efficiently and in time.
