A series of Human Practices throughout our project covered the background, experimental design, and hardware design. These not only promoted the progress of our whole project, but also helped us to improve and explore the future direction of it. In addition, we also promoted the multi-virus detection system to the public and further expanded the significance of our project.
We designed a questionnaire to find out how much the general public knows about the basic knowledge of coronavirus. We have grouped the respondents of the questionnaire, and some of the questions will be different for them with different majors and qualifications, so that we can analyze the result more accurately. We set over 20 questions to ensure the objectivity and accuracy of our questionnaire. By analyzing the results, we realized that there is a basic understanding of coronavirus for most people. Because the presence of coronaviruses, from SARS in 2001 to SARS-CoV-2 and others today, has had a huge negative impact on people's lives, as well as making people live in fear that the virus is all around us. In addition, to protect their personal information and not make them annoyed, we only collected some useful information of them.
Through this questionnaire, we felt that a multi-virus detection system that could predict viruses in the environment was necessary, so we identified our project as a multi-virus detection system.
Shenyang Center for Disease Control (CDC)
In order to directly understand SARS-CoV-2 and the overall situation of current SARS-CoV-2 prevention and control, we contacted Shenyang Center for Disease Control (CDC) for a visit, and learned the relevant knowledge. First of all, we had a preliminary understanding of the instruments commonly used by CDC and their working principles. Then, we learned about the overall detection process for the SARS-CoV-2 at the present stage, which inspired the research direction and application scope of our multi-virus detection system.

We systematically consulted the technical staff of CDC about the classification of viruses and the characteristics of various viruses.
The technicians focused on the classification method of coronavirus and the similarities and differences of different kinds of coronavirus, which also provided ideas for our multi-virus detection system. We also carried out further systematic learning and used it in our science education, which was shared in science camp, student education, Wechat Public Platform and bilibili platform.

In addition, we briefly introduced our project to the staff, and the communication with them brought us a lot of inspiration for the research and practical application of the multi-virus detection system. Combined with their experience of sampling viruses in the environment, where concentrations are very low, they focused on giving us advice and guidance on the amplification of detection signals for our project. With their help, we emphatically conducted quorum sensing system improvement., and keep continuous communication with other schools that use quorum sensing system. At present, the methods used to control various infectious diseases are still the same as those used many years ago, and there has been no progress or innovation in the detection. We picture that we can develop a hardware for environmental virus detection based on our multi-virus detection system to collect and detect viruses in the air which is in a similar way to air purifier, and eliminate the collected viruses to protect the health of people in public places.
Tieling Xinyi Food Company
In addition to directly infecting human beings, SARS-CoV-2 is also found to be positive in many foods. In 2021, Shandong province of China reported that the nucleic acid test results of some imported whey powder and milk jujube products were positive. As the products have entered the market, many provinces launched emergency screening.

We visited Tieling Xinyi Food Company, which mainly produces sausages. We investigated their production line on the spot and learned about the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 on them. We found that even with the increased supervision of food safety, sampling and testing methods for food production environment are still troublesome and limited, which makes us firmly believe that it is necessary to develop a hardware that can integrate constant current air sampling, sample pre-processing and real-time detection.
Zhongzi Huayu Testing and Inspection Company
The main content of this project is multi-virus detection, that is, the realization of direct sampling and detection from the air. Our team is trying to develop a hardware that can integrate constant flow air sampling, sample pretreatment and real-time detection. Considering that the current monitoring process for some environmental indicators such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide、is similar to that of this project, we visited Zhongzi Huayu Testing and Inspection Company on April 8, 2021 and learned the sampling, processing and testing techniques of environmental monitoring indicators.

We learned about the widely used sampling method: using air samplers for sampling. With the explanation of relevant personnel, we learned about the working principle and application scope of air samplers, which gave us some inspiration for virus sampling.
Then we visited the laboratory of the company and learned the sample pretreatment technology and detection method. The detection method for some samples, such as sulfur dioxide, is very similar to the method used in our project, the fluorescence method, which also demonstrates the feasibility of our project.
Of course, for some air indicators, such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, etc., the integration of sampling, processing and detection cannot be fully realized at present. For the above indicators, most methods used at present are to first enrich the measured substances, then to pretreat the enriched absorbent, and then to test the treated samples. These processes are relatively independent. On this basis, this project will try to transform the whole monitoring process to realize integration and automation, that is, to develop a hardware that can integrate constant flow air sampling, sample pretreatment and real-time detection.
Pig Farm
The SARS-CoV-2 had a profound impact on many fields, in which we visited pig farms to investigate and understand the impact of the virus on their breeding and production.

We learned that in addition to coronavirus, swine fever had also affected them greatly, resulting in a large number of pigs dying and heavy losses, while the detection methods used by pig farms were so outdated that they can only infer whether the virus is still present by trying to place healthy pigs in sterilized pens to see whether they will be infected. If we can adapt our hardware to detect more viruses in the future, we will be able to greatly help improve the efficiency of virus detection in the environment. Hospital respiratory consultation
We visited the hospital's respiratory department and consulted with the doctors about the pneumonia caused by SARS-CoV-2, and learned about other diseases caused by viruses similar to SARS-CoV-2, and the symptoms they have in common. We then followed up with a further literature review, which was summarized and applied in our education section.
At the same time, we learned about virus detection and eradication methods in hospitals and introduced our project to doctors, who supported our project and thought that if this multi-virus detection device could really be used in hospitals and other public places, it would be effective in virus prevention and control.
Forbidden City
We selected a place with a high flow of visitors, the Forbidden City in Shenyang, to conduct a survey on the awareness of virus prevention and control, and selected random visitors for science education. The background and the serious health effects of SARS-CoV-2 were explained to people through the posters. And the ways of how to effectively protect people from the virus, such as a live demonstration of the right way to wash hands and wear masks, were presented by our volunteers.
