Abstract

On this page, we describe how our project impacts the
Sustainable Developmental Goals as put forth by the United Nations.

Introduction

PsiloAid has the potential to impact multiple sustainable development goals as put forward by the United Nations. This is done through targeting goal 3 and 9 from the Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainable Development Goals and Target Goals

Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

With PsiloAid, we aim for our research to be used for the promotion and manufacturing of psilocybin as a treatment modality for depression and potentially other psychiatric disorders. In ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being across all ages, we target multiple targets such as:

Target 3.4 - By 2030, reduce premature mortality by one third from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment, and promote mental health and well-being [1]. Through PsiloAid, we want to hit this target by indirectly making psilocybin production easy, feasible and accessible for both private companies and research institutions.

Target 3.5 - Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol. [1]. While not directly targeting substance abuse, a treatment that alleviates symptoms might also reduce symptomatic-related behaviour such as drug abuse, alcoholism, and self-harm.

Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation

Additionally, with PsiloAid, we aim to promote new innovative treatment modalities. We want to make the modalities accessible to research psilocybins neurobiological effects. We target these through target 9.5: “Enhance scientific research, upgrade the technological capabilities of industrial sectors in all countries, in particular developing countries, including, by 2030, encouraging innovation and substantially increasing the number of research and development workers per 1 million people and public and private research and development spending” [2].

By sharing our research and showing the innovative possibilities of producing psilocybin through E. coli, as well as making psilocybin production feasible and accessible to research labs, our project helps achieve target 9.5 of the Developmental Sustainability Goals.
