Mental Health Education and Counseling Center of Fuzhou University

We consulted our mental health education and counseling center on campus on the current status of depression among college students. And we summarized some of the important findings below.

1. How does the psychological center help students who need psychological counseling?
The psychology center usually takes the students' willingness as the premise, and adopts the method of psychological counseling to the students in need, listening to the students' psychological distress, easing the students' emotions, alleviating the pressure of the students, and then solving the knots and solving problems with the students.

2. Do you think the establishment of mental health centers in colleges will help college students' mental health?
It definitely helps. Because the number of students in each college is very large, and mental health education and counseling are indispensable for today's students. As the "main force" in the construction of college students' mental health, the Psychological Center is mainly responsible for organizing, planning, and coordinating the mental health education of college students. Special lectures are held at ordinary times, and mental health knowledge is promoted through various channels such as publications, posters, and the Internet; planning, organizing, carrying out, and following up the health education activities for college students; organizing the implementation of college students’ psychological surveys to grasp the basic situation of students’ mental health, Screen and return visits to students who exceed the standard, and conduct psychological consultation and intervention for students with serious psychological problems. This is very helpful for maintaining students' physical and mental health, enhancing their mental health awareness, advancing the work of peer psychological counseling for college students, and giving full play to the functions of college students' self-education, self-management, and self-service.

3. How to know that people around you need psychotherapy intervention?
Each semester, the Psychology Center provides psychological health education theories and skills training for student political workers and student mental health workers. After teaching, student mental health workers can determine whether their students have recent emotional abnormalities, imbalances in daily routines, etc. And know the recent situation of the students to judge whether the students need help. At the same time, the psychological center has also established a four-level network of efficient psychological work, starting from the mental health worker closest to the classmates, to the psychological department of the college, to the counselor, and finally to the psychological center. Solve students' psychological problems with the highest efficiency.

4. Is depression common in colleges and universities?
Strictly speaking, depression is not common. Depressions are different. Many people will have depression in a stressful environment or external stimuli, but depression can be routinely carried out through friends’ care and mental relaxation. Depression is usually difficult to fully recover from the patient’s own ability. It requires the help of psychological counseling or even referral to a psychotherapist for medication. Therefore, the students assisted by the psychological center are usually depressed, anxious, etc., but there have been students with depressive tendencies or even mental illnesses such as depression. We will have professional teachers to help classmates.

5. What are the main sources of students’ pressure?
Visitors’ problems mainly include learning pressure, interpersonal relationship problems, family relationship problems, etc. Sometimes there will be graduating students who are confused about the future contact us, usually, we will recommend these students to our school’s career planning center Seek help.

6. How to prevent depression and reduce psychological pressure?
Preventing depression is actually to keep your mind healthy, and there are many ways to keep your mind healthy, such as exercising more, regularly living and resting, communicating more with people around you, and establishing your own social support system. When the pressure is high, you can relieve the pressure by talking to others or carrying out cathartic activities that do not harm society and others. When necessary, you should contact the psychological center for help in time.
