• What work outside or inside of iGEM inspired your project? The inspiration of our project: Team members expressed their views on the direction of the team project at the beginning of our discussion. Shanyu Huang holds an important position in the school's psychological center. At the same time, she has always been very concerned about the physical and mental health of the people around her, and is also committed to using biology to solve people's mental illnesses. One day she learned about the mechanism of optogenetics while reading a science article. So she sprouted the idea of using optogenetics to treat depression. • How COVID-19 impacted our project.
Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in Fujian Province in September, the presentation meeting that we and FAFU-China had originally decided to hold in Fuzhou No. 2 Middle School had to be cancelled. In order to make up for this regret, our team sent our team’s brochure to them. What needs to be pointed out is that in mid-to-late September, the members of the experimental group were quarantined, and our experiment had to be suspended.
Because of COVID-19, we and our partners cannot directly enter each other's laboratory for experimental cooperation, and can only make up for it by mailing some biological components to each other. At the same time, due to the restrictions of the epidemic, communication with our partners can basically only be carried out online.

Collaboration

We have reached effective and friendly cooperation with many teams, more details can be viewed in this page: Collaboration(要有链接)

Human Practice

Our team has carried out many activities in the society. Those activities involve schools, hospitals, mainstream media, prestigious associations, etc. We received effective feedback when interacting with various groups of people in society. At the same time, our project activities have also had a certain positive impact on society. That is to mean, we have investigated and clearly documented the impact of our project on various stakeholders.

Proposed Implementation

• Our proposed end users:Depressed patients.
• How do you envision others using your project?
Our proposed end users can use our biocircuit to treat depression. As you can see, our team is positioning the project on BL21(DE3) in the human gastrointestinal system. In order to solve one problem that light cannot reach the human body’s gastrointestinal system, we set up light module. However, our ambition which is imagined in future is that, patients with depression can feel less anxious by taking glutamate-containing foods and sunbathing. So that they do not have to suffer from depression and they do not have to take medical treatment and worry about medication. They will be happy again under the sun eating delicious food. But we still working on it.
• How would you implement your project in the real world?
Details can be saw in: Result & Calendar(要有跳转链接)
• What are the safety aspects you would need to consider?
E. coli has endotoxin, so we chose endotoxin-deficient E.coli. We already think about some of these issues for the Safety Form.
• What other challenges would you need to consider?
The application of our project, including application to clinical treatment or commercial development, requires continuous verification. Especially if our project wants to realize the initial blueprint, that is, depression patients can produce GABA by synthetic biology system when they are isunbathing. We need to have more in-depth research on GABA, intercellular signaling pathways, cell membrane surface glycoproteins and enzymes. But we believe that with the development of science and technology, one day in the future, our blueprint can come true.
