Our team members


Anagnostakis Charalampos, Undergraduate student at School of Pharmacy, AUTH and member of our Wet Lab and Dry Lab teams. He came up with the initial idea of using toehold switches to design a diagnostic tool. As a member of our Dry Lab, he was mainly responsible for our bioinformatics analysis that was performed to confirm the biomarkers we chose based on literature research, and participated in our toehold design and analysis. As a member of our Wet Lab team, he contributed to many experiments for our proof of concept, especially for testing of our sequences. He, also, participated in the “How to read COVID-19?” workshop organization for SFHMMY 12, the organization of “National Cancer Survivors Day” webinar and 85th Thessaloniki International Fair and participated in the interview for Live Media. In addition, he was a member of our graphics team and he designed many of our promotional materials, banners and social media graphics. Finally, he organized our Promotional and Presentation Video.

Anastasiou Anna, BSc in Molecular Biology and Genetics, DUTH and member of our Wet Lab. She contributed mainly to the literature research for choosing the appropriate biomarkers and the appropriate amplification technique. As a member of our Wet Lab, she developed our EXPAR protocol and ran the experiments to test it. She participated in our Public Engagement activities, as well, such as the interview for Molecular Cloud, ERT3, 85th Thessaloniki International Fair and the seminars for private educational institutes. She contributed to our Human Practices, organizing meetings with specialists on our subject and most importantly, she was responsible for the communication with the National Organization of Medicines. In addition, she was a member of our Content Team and she was responsible for revising the content of our Wiki. Finally, she oversaw the application for the impact grant, which we eventually won.

Varvari Anna, Undergraduate student at School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and member of our Dry Lab team. She was responsible for our Wiki coding, graphics and illustration. She participated in the design and analysis of our toehold switches and the design of the corresponding software tool. She, also, took our project idea one step further by adding the idea of designing the appropriate hardware to facilitate our diagnostic method and she was responsible for the design of this device. She was also engaged in our Education and Communication activities and she contributed to the “How to read COVID-19?” workshop for SFHMMY and she was in charge of preparing the educational materials for the asynchronous seminars. More specifically, she created the content and edited our educational video. Finally, she participated in our partnership by designing an interactive informative game for students using the Scratch platform.

Vergini Danai Eleni, Undergraduate student at School of Pharmacy and member of our Wet Lab team. As a member of our Wet Lab, she contributed to the literature research for the appropriate biomarkers and the amplification methods, as well as the design and implementation of our experiments regarding cloning and PCR. She, also, contributed to the documentation and organization of our experiments protocols and lab books in Benchling. As a member of our Content Team, she was responsible for the Proposed Implementation, Project Description and Title and Abstract criteria and for revising our Wiki content. In addition, she contributed to our project safety analysis, specifically for our Safety Form. She, also, participated in our Education and Communication activities, by preparing the presentation of our team for HelMSIC and SFHMMY and participating in the interview for ERT3. Finally, she was responsible for our participation in the 85th Thessaloniki International Fair.

Theodosiadou Anastasia, Undergraduate student at School of Biology, AUTH and member of our Wet Lab team. She was responsible for our partnership activities and communication with our fellow team iGEM Patras, as well as for our collaborations. In the context of our Partnership, she represented our team in organizing the FR and Graphics Workshops, the “Rosalind Chronicles” and the seminar “It’s all about iGEM: A SynBio Day”. She contributed to many of our Education and Communication activities and more specifically, in ESFIE presentation, SFHMMY presentation, the interview for ERT3, 85th Thessaloniki International Fair, the seminars for private educational institutes and she co-organized the iGEM Meetup: Greek Edition. She was, also, responsible for our social media, both as regards to the promotion of our team and outreach events and the communication with other iGEM teams and students. As a member of our Wet Lab, she contributed to the design and implementation of many experiments concerning cloning and PCR, as well as writing and organizing of our Wet Lab protocols and lab books in Benchling.

Kosmidou Maria, Undergraduate student at School of Pharmacy, AUTH and member of our Wet Lab team. She was responsible for our fundraising and financial planning. As a member of our Wet Lab, she contributed to the experiments for testing our toehold switches. She participated in our Human Practices by organizing meetings with specialists in Molecular Diagnostics and Cancer, including the meeting with Labnet, Pfizer, Biogenea. She contributed to our Education and Communication activities, including the FR webinar and 85th Thessaloniki International Fair and she was responsible for organizing our “National Cancer Survivors Day” webinar. She also helped in reaching the Greek Ministry of Education to approve our educational material. In addition, she contributed to our Public Relations, by taking part in many interviews for ERT3, TV100, DION TV, Radio Thessaloniki, 102 FM, 100 FM and the electronical newspaper karfitsa. Finally, she participated in the Next Stage Challenge competition and our entrepreneurship.

Trygoniaris Dimitrios, Undergraduate student at School of Physics and member of our Dry Lab. As a member of our Dry Lab team, he contributed to the design and analysis of our toehold switches, as well as the design of our mass kinetics model. He was responsible for the Engineering Success criteria and he also participated in our Education and Communication activities. More specifically, he participated in the interview with Molecular Cloud, our meeting with Biogenea, the organization of “National Cancer Survivors Day” webinar and in the 85th Thessaloniki International Fair. Finally, as a member of our Human Practices team, he organized many of the meetings with specialists.

Tsigilis Alexandros, Undergraduate student at School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and member of our Dry Lab team. As a member of our Dry Lab team, he contributed to our analysis with the Nupack Software tool and in the design of our device. He also participated in the 85th Thessaloniki International Fair.

Tsouderou Konstantina, Undergraduate student at School of Pharmacy and member of our Wet Lab team. She was responsible for our entrepreneurship and business model analysis and she, also, participated in the Next Stage Challenge Competition. As a member of our Wet Lab, she was responsible for ordering the necessary reagents and consumables and for training members of our team to design and perform our experiments. She also contributed to the design of our g-blocks, by adding the necessary sequences for them to be cloned. Finally, she participated in the interview for TV100 and ERT3.

Chatzichristofis Emmanouil, Undergraduate student at School of Chemistry, AUTH and member of our Wet Lab team. He participated in literature research, both for choosing our biomarkers and the amplification method. He, also, contributed to our project safety analysis, both for our Wiki page. In addition, he was a member of our Content Team and he was responsible for revising our Wiki content.






Our advisors


Valatsos Panagiotis, Undergraduate Student at School of Informatics, AUTH. He contributed to the analysis of our toehold switches using the ViennaRNA software tool, our mass kinetics model and also the development of our machine learning prediction models. He, also, helped with our Education and Communication activities by participating in our “How to read COVID-19” workshop for SFHMMY.

Arampatzis Asterios, , MSc student in Biotechnology in ETH Zurich. He helped us with the design of cloning procedures and subsequently with correctly designing our toehold switches and adding the essential parts for the cloning and function of our toehold switches. He guided us throughout the cloning and helped us troubleshoot our experiments, giving ideas and advice on how to improve them.

Lalagkas Panagiotis-Nikolaos, MSc in Primary Health Care, Department of Medicine, DUTH. He helped our Dry Lab team with the bioinformatics analysis.

Sionakidis Aristeidis, PhD student (MRC DTP in Precision Medicine), at the Institute of Genetics & Cancer of the University of Edinburgh. He helped our Dry Lab team with the bioinformatics analysis.




Principal Investigator


Dr. Vizirianakis Ioannis, Associate Professor of Molecular Pharmacology and Pharmacogenomics, Laboratory of Pharmacology, School of Pharmacy and our Primary Principal Investigator. He allowed us to work in his lab and offered us the necessary equipment and reagents. He also contributed to our lab work by suggesting us literature and troubleshooting. In addition, he gave us access to Aristotle Docs, the AUTh High Performance Computing infrastructure and helped our dry lab team with the bioinformatics analysis. He helped us with our Human Practices by getting in touch with many specialists and stakeholders related to our project, including Diagnostic Centers, Pharmaceutical Companies and the Greek Ministry of Education to approve our educational material. Finally, he helped us with our fundraising, through the communication with many possible sponsors.
