Collaborations
During this year of the iGEM competition, we collaborated several times with other teams, to promote iGEM or the teams' projects, to help the teams in their projects, or to make the link with the other teams.
French meet-up
On Saturday 11th of September, all French teams organized the French Meet-up. We invited three speakers to share with us their work and their vision on synthetic biology as a workshop. For this purpose, each team member has a specific task to complete for the organization: communication, games, workshop, schedule. Our representatives for the Aix-Marseille team were Manon Liju and Alizé Hascoet, they participated in the meetings about the organization of the event and respectively participated in the communication and the organization of the workshops. Manon, also in charge of our Instagram account, helped in the communication campaign thanks to posts and stories; Alizé was in charge of contacting professionals in synthetic biology for workshops. During the day, teams presented their project, played games, and listened to professional presentations.
Insta Game
We organized an Instagram game to promote the iGEM projects of the different teams participating in the 2021 edition. For this, we asked the iGEM 2021 teams to describe their project with existing or created emojis. We then published all the emojis received in stories from Monday, September 13th to Saturday, September 17th at a rate of 5 teams per day. On Sunday we were able to announce the winner to whom we sent a pack of goodies from our team. You can see an example of a few stories but you can also see the whole game in our front page stories on our Instagram account @igemaixmairseille.
Here is the list of the 29 teams that participated in this game by giving us emojis to describe their project: IISER Bhopal, Estonia TUIT, Siberia, IISER Pune India, Aachen, CCU Taiwan, Warwick, Aboa,Greece United, Bielefeld CeBITec, Duke, Navarra BG, Tec-Monterrey, MIT, KCIS NewTaipei, Mingadao, Thessaloniki, NAWI Graz, Patras, NTNU Trondheim, UPF Barcelona, Tuebingen, Open Science Global, FCB UNAL, MIPT MSU, TecCEM, SZPT CHINA, NTU Singapore and USP Brazil.
In addition to these collaborations we have set up, we have also participated in collaborations proposed by other teams.
Brainstorming OSU
We participated in the brainstorming organized by the Ohio State team (at the beginning of the year). The purpose of this meeting was to discuss our emerging projects and share different ideas and points of view. This meeting was very constructive!
iGEM Monument challenge
The first small collaboration we participated in was the #igemmonumentchallenge of the GO Paris Saclay team. This challenge consisted in taking a picture of the team in front of a monument of the city. A small part of our team was photographed on Fort Saint-Jean, with, in the background, the very known "Vieux port" of Marseille and Notre Dame de la Garde.
IGEM 2021 teams' presentation video
The Nantes teamcreated a video to present the iGEM teams participating in the 2021 edition. Each team sent one or several videos where some members of the team presented themselves. For us, it is Rebecca and Aude who presented themselves in a video shot in our dear Calanques to represent our city well!
Postal project
This year again the team of Düsseldorf organized the postal project. We sent a postcard with an illustration, made by Louis Carrel-Billiard, of which we are very proud! We then received postcards from the other teams during September, which allowed us to discover several projects that we didn't know yet!
The war on germs
The war on germs is a book written by the CCU Taïwan team. It is a parent-child picture book to achieve hygiene promotion and to raise preschool kids' interest in science. To the State, the team makes the book available to as many children around the world as possible, CCU Taiwan wanted to translate it into as many languages as possible. So when they came to us for help in translating it into French, we were happy to help them with the translation. Margot and Clara played the role of translators.
Ifly project
The flying project is a project initiated by the Aachen team. The small iGEM paper plane flew around the world again this year to put the iGEM teams in their laboratory clothes to do the wetlab. This plane made a stop in Marseille for the greatest pleasure of our wetlab team! We were very happy to participate in this project which shows the very varied origins of the iGEM teams.
iGEM Warwick Collaborative outreach booklet
The Warwick team has created in collaboration with several iGEM teams a booklet for students from 16 to 18 years old to discover synthetic biology through different iGEM projects. As each team did a short summary of our project, we explained why synthetic biology was important for the project and how this project answers a current problem.
iGEM Korea_HS quarantine themed Instagram project
We participated in the project of the iGEM Korea HS team by sending a picture of our team and a summary of our project. They then used these two to make an Instagram post for each participating team. The goal of this project was to create a sense of community and to make it easier for the teams to connect during this epidemic time when meetings were difficult to organize.
Martina
We also participated in the collaboration initiated by the MTU iGEM team which aims once again to make a non-exhaustive list of iGEM 2021 projects and thus show their diversity.
Brainstorming on mosquitoes and biocontainment
We have been in regular contact with the SYNFRONTERAS from iGEM UNILA who worked just like us on mosquitoes. This was a great way to share our knowledge about the insect, its impact on countries from the other side of the globe and discover that they are transmitting diseases affected not only humans but also animals. During a special meeting, we also talked about bioconfinement issues and discussed the best ways to spread GMO in Nature.
Bioremediation
poster
The iGEM Nu-Kazakhstan team made several posters on different themes in biology and synthetic biology so that they could be distributed in schools. To enlarge the number of schools that can use the posters, they wanted to translate them in a maximum of languages. So it is with pleasure that Marion translated their poster on bioremediation so that it can be used in French schools!
