Communication
To improve public awareness of our program and synthetic biology, we made contact with a local community (Tianlin Community, Xuhui District, Shanghai). The community officer gives us a chance to introduce our program to a group of 7-12-year-old kids. When designing our offline popular science activity about our project, considering most of our audience's young age, we came up with two plans. Firstly we created a PowerPoint introducing basic knowledge of silage, ruminant, and engineered bacteria. At the same time, we included exciting activities such as "quick question and answer" activities in the PPT to stimulate the audience's enthusiasm and initiative to participate in the topic. At the end of our presentation, we restate the question of the subject: the prospects and problems of silage, and go through all the contents in general.
For another plan, we carry out offline quiz competition activities. Every student who comes to participate in the subject activity will get a registration card at the entrance. Then, by walking around the room, students can learn about different subject knowledge at other tables and answer the corresponding questions to get the stickers. Finally, when they leave the room, they can redeem the corresponding rewards by using the stickers on the registration card.
Unfortunately, due to new Covid-19 cases had been identified in Shanghai, we were forced to move our science popularization activities offline to online. As a forward-looking group, we always have a plan B. The topic of our group is the optimization of silage for ruminants, which happens to have many similarities with another group. Their topic is the optimization of monogastric animals’ forage. Therefore, we have decided to work with this group on an in-depth basis. The two groups had a pleasant negotiation about a collaboration plan and popularization through online voice chat and offline meetings. After several meetings, we decided to use the online video to present the two groups' topics in daily language. To meet the viewing preferences of our audience, young children and adolescents, we need to ensure that the content is as attractive as possible. After carefully designing the script, we created two cartoon characters, "chicken" and "cow,", which narrowed the distance between the audience and the plot of our video, increasing their desire to watch it. Secondly, using mature dubbing technology, professional dubbing equipment, high-quality puppets, and detailed description of the character image of "chicken" and "cow", we make a comparative design of the two characters in voice, appearance, and personality, shaping two well-rounded animal images. By creating a humorous but general dialogue between the two characters, with a farm setting that is closely related to the subject, we give the reader a sense of kinship and a deeper understanding of our subject at the same time. In addition, we incorporated current meme and fashion elements into the script to ensure that our videos were in line with the public's aesthetic and values and make abstract professional knowledge more accessible for the people.
Our corporation project with another team used both online and offline communication, taking into account the preferences and needs of the audience. The reasonable opinions and suggestions of the members of the two teams were applied to the idea of the video script, and such an exquisite idea was perfectly presented to the audience through highly skilled collaboration and professional skill collocation. At the same time, we use language close to public life and value to show the interestingness and humor of our video. This series of high standards of collaboration increased our working efficiency and the quality of the video.
