Laboratory safety
Our lab is classified as biosafety level I and is provided by Professor. Yang. Before entering and starting lab work, all of our members in Wet Lab had passed the Laboratory Training to make sure each member understands the rules. Everyone was in full compliance with safety policies.
All the members must follow these rules :
- Requiring lab technicians to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), such as protective gloves, laboratory coats.
- All laboratory workers should undergo simple first aid training.
- Dispose of any hazardous material as toxic waste
- Keep the workplace tidy. A tidy laboratory avoids accidents for everyone.
Project design safety
We use E.coli DH5α and A. tumefaciens LBA4404 Cells in our project, they are very common in the laboratory and are relatively harmless to humans. Considering biosafety and the potential environmental problem, we use plant callus instead of the whole real plant, and conduct this series of experiments in lab only.
Project Specific Laboratory Safety
For nematodes(B. xylophilus) that are used in the laboratory, we freeze nematodes for a few days before disposing of them. Also, we disposed of them as toxic wastes.
Supervision
Our team is supervised by a Professor. Yang and some seniors. We report to Prof. Yang every week to make sure our experiments are conducted safely and that our lab environment is kept clean.
