Partnership

Overview

It’s such a coincidence that we had a similar topic and search for different ways in solving the same problem. More fortunately, we are in the same city, which is more convenient for us to communicate and help each other in what we are good at. We communicate and coordinate both online and offline, with a frequency of at least once a month.

HUST2-China

WET LAB

Online meetup(WHU <--> HUST2 In the early stage)

We held our first meeting in May and shared our initial design of the project and this exchange got us to think about bacteriocin's ability to kill bacteria. At the same time, we discussed some experiences of participating in the competition. We designed a preliminary cooperation plan as well.

Share Strains (WHU --> HUST2 In the middle stage)

Since we have the same theme of the iGEM project, we both need the interested bacteria strain, Propionibacterium acnes. However, it’s not convenient for HUST2-China to gain such strains, so on August 10th we gave them some plates with P. acnes, brain-heart infusion and some Anaero packs. While HUST2-China didn’t use the professional zip lock bags, the bacteria didn’t grow well. Soon on August 17th we gave them P. acnes again, which was appreciated by HUST2-China.

At the same time, we shared the culture method of Propionibacterium acnes and the materials required, which were crucial for the verification of bactericidal function in our two projects.

Continuous online communication (WHU --> HUST2 Through the whole project)

During the whole process, we have been using QQ to communicate online, mainly focusing on:

  • Selection of bactericidal substances
  • Experimental design of bactericidal effect
  • Comparison of bacteriocin and antimicrobial peptide against Propionibacterium acnes
  • How does protein structure analysis help us in our experiments

MODELING

Online meetup (WHU <--> HUST2 In the early stage)

In July, we started our cooperation with the mathematical models. Our team members had a meeting to discuss that we can build some models for our project so that we can enhance the procedure in wet lab. And then we shared our primary models and talked about correlative questions and ideas. During the workshop, we got inspired to think about the analysis of the structure of bacteriocin we use and improve our own models in terms of FBA model. Their model group gained the experience of making mathematical models and cooperating with wet lab group since its their first time to participate in.

Alliances(WHU <--> HUST2 Through the whole project)

Because of our similar backgrounds and close relationships, we shared a lot of information and formed a lot of alliances with other teams.

Education

Lecture at HUST(WHU --> HUST2 In the early stage)

We went to the China center For Type Culture Collection to investigate the cultivation and experimental method of facultative anaerobe bacteria such as Propionibacterium acnes, providing science popularization materials for HUST2.

Lecture at WHU(WHU <-- HUST2 In the later stage)

On the first weekend after the freshmen came to College of Life Science in Wuhan University, we held a lecture on synthetic biology and iGEM. It’s worth noting that we collaborated with HUST2-China Team to give a more comprehensive introduction through different points of view.

Visit enterprise

We together visited some enterprise online and offline.

In August 29th, we gathered together to set up a meetup online with managers of Hubei Humanwell Chengtain Pharmaceutica co., LTD and Ascentage Pharma. These two companies were contacted by our group leader in real word. And as long as we obtained this opportunity, our team and the company invited HUST2-China to join us. Thanks to these two companies and their principals, we had learned lots of knowledge and confirmed how we modified our products’ position in the market.

The online communication allowed the two teams to think from a business perspective, and it greatly assisted us on writhing business plan.

CONCLUSION

HUST2-China is our perfect partner. We put forward our ideas and debated, then improved our projects in a variety of ways throughout the season. We coordinated in almost every field like education, human practice, real world application and so on, which is central to the success of both teams’ projects. We make acquaintances with each other and sincerely hope to have a deeper cooperation in and after iGEM.
