1)Practicing under supervision

Safety is one of the main parts that we considered throughout all experiments. In terms of biological concerns, all of the germs we applied were authorized by Renmin University of China, and were manipulated under supervision and regulation. The biological materials we used were all conformed to be harmless whether to the environment or to human beings. More specifically, Saccharomyces cerevisiae (str.TOP10), routinely used in laboratory and recognized as a low risk experimental tool, is the yeast we use in our project. In addition, the gene fragments carried by our engineered S.C cells are all synthesized and are only utilized in the laboratory to produce the target product. In terms of the operations, our operations are based on standard protocols, which means that we only use them in the laboratory and strictly observe the laboratory safety regulations.

Furthermore, the later production using S.C cells, are required to go through a strict purification process and follow the food safety standards. Besides, our engineered bacteria are relatively safer than E. coli(which may lead to bacteriophage infection and endotoxin contamination), which is the material originally used to produce 2-FL.
Concerning the aspect of management, our advisors are professional experts and are very experienced in the area of microbiology and molecular biology. All the team members received proper education and training from our secondary PI and strictly follow the guidelines for basic biological experiments.

2)The equipments in the laboratory

In order to ensure the safety of experiments, as well as preventing accidents and emergencies, our laboratory is equipped with sophisticated safety precautions as the followings:

The eyewash equipment, for unexpected chemical contamination in eyes.

Extinguisher, for fire emergencies due to the leak of electricity or other reasons.

The regulation in the laboratory, including equipments guide and dealing with emergencies.

Variety of equipments in the lab. All of those are energy saving and environmental friendly.
