Members
GreatBay_SZ is a wonderful team comprised of students and tutors from different parts of China. Our passion for synthetic biology brought us together to form this team. We have 2 team leaders, 12 other team members, and 4 tutors. The following is a detailed introduction to our brilliant members (the lists are in alphabetical order of the members' names).
Team Leaders
Kelly Liu:
Kelly is one of our leaders for this project. She is currently a freshman studying at the Shenzhen College of International Education. Kelly employs a wide range of hobbies, including music, reading, and sports. She is also an academically competitive student. Besides iGEM, she is also preparing for her upcoming physics and chemistry competitions. As the leader, Kelly is probably one of the most responsible and enthusiastic members of the team. She has great communication skills and gets along with everyone. Kelly has contributed to nearly all parts of the project, especially experiment, human practice, and planning, in addition to overlooking the entire team.
Oscar Lu:
Oscar is one of our leaders for this project. He is currently in grade 11, studying at the Guangzhou Foreign Language School. He is a natural leader, displaying great leadership skills, as reflected by his consistent efforts in management our team. Oscar is an extremely talented biochemistry student, who has attended math competitions, chemistry competitions, and biology competitions. He can be acknowledged for his patience with every member, providing guidance but also pushing everyone to do their best. Oscar has contributed significantly in this project in many areas, such as presenting, planning and most importantly, managing the team.
Team Members
Alice Huang:
Alice, also a student studying at Shenzhen College of International Education, is an optimistic and bright member of the group. She is currently a freshman and she loves to spend her freetime drawing, reading, watching movies and having fun with her friends. Alice is not only talented in biology, she has excellent literacy with language, which aids in both written and verbal communication throughout this project. Overall, Alice showed particular enthusiasm with the experimental and human practice parts of this project.
Alina Wang:
Alina is a sophomore studying at the Independent Schools Foundation Academy from Hong Kong. She shows great collaborative skills and shares the common hobby of drawing. Her talent in drawing has surely helped our team, specifically with the graphics and aesthetics of this wiki page. As someone who is passionate about science, Alina has chosen to study biology and chemistry at higher level in the IB diploma program, and her knowledge in these two fields of science was extremely helpful for this project. She is a playful and positive character, always seeking to make new friends and work with others.
Ashley Li:
Ashley is a sophomore studying at the Shenzhen Institute of International Exchange. She is a serious and goal orientated member, always focused on the project and potential areas of improvement. Ashley is determined to study biology in university and thus joined this project to gain experience in scientific research. She is especially active in giving presentations and this allowed her to practice and develop her communication skills. This must be taken as a compliment, but it is undeniable that Ashley is always the one who provides questions and feedback for people, reflecting her genuine passion and interests in this project.
Ashley Luo:
Ashley is a good director of promotion video and a resilient member who has made significant contributions throughout the stages of this project. She currently studies at Shenzhen College of International Education and aims to receive higher education in biology in the future. As a child, she watched a lot of biology documentaries which sparked her interest in biology and inspired her to enter the competition to explore further. She is easy to talk to and relates to everyone, thanks to her various hobbies, such as baking, crochet, photography, hiking and badminton. Ashley presented herself as an active member, always speaking up and never afraid to disagree with existing ideas and plans. She finds it very rewarding that this competition can enrich her personal experience and that she can solve a real-life problem in her own way.
Cherry Li:
Cherry is a sophomore studying at the Independent Schools Foundation Academy from Hong Kong. She shares great interest in biology, always showing curiosity and a thirst for knowledge in this field that can solve and impact global issues. Cherry has chosen to study biology and chemistry at higher level in the IB diploma, where she often draws connections between the knowledge learnt in school with this project. Apart from IGEM, she attended scientific conferences, such as AGU, and thus was able to apply research and scientific literary skills from AGU to this project. This project enabled Cherry to practice her collaborative skills, especially working with such a large group of students, and managing all the different sub-groups.
Frank Niu:
Frank is a high school student studying at the Guangzhou Foreign Language School. Frank is probably the member with the most hobbies. He enjoys ball games, movies, music, drums and editing videos. He shows a excellent talent in critical thinking of scientific field. Chemistry can be a subject, he really good at, thus he is a chemistry club leader in his school to promote the interests of chemistry of students in his school. Also he has a great interests in biology to support his synthetic biology experiment.
Hemolysis Liu:
Hemolysis is an 11th grade student in Guangdong Experimental High School. He has a wide range of hobbies. He is very fond of sports, including scuba diving, rock climbing, cycling and archery. He also has a wide range of disciplines, and he talented in engineering and science. He has learned five programming languages including python, arduino, app inventor, c++ and HTML, and has also tried 3d modeling. He built a 3D printer himself when he was in middle school. Therefore, most of the WIKI pages are done by him. Although he had some success in engineering, his target discipline is biology. He has been very interested in natural science since childhood. Influenced by two doctors in his family, he became interested in medicine, so he attended the summer school of Human Anatomy in 2018. At the same time, he came into contact with Marine science through scuba diving. The world of ocean, which is completely different from land, deeply attracted him, so he also hopes to learn related disciplines in the future.
Kobe Chen:
Kobe is a student studying at Guangdong Country Garden School. He can be commended for his strong sense of responsibility, shown by his consistent efforts, always making steady progress every week. Just like the majority of us, Kobe would like to study medicine and shows great interest in experimental sciences. He loves to swim, diving and read. He gets along with everyone, and is always up to offer a helping hand.
Koxui Zhai:
Koxui is in grade 10 at Chongqing Nankai Middle School. In addition to his interest in biology and experimental sciences, Koxui also enjoys listening to music and playing Chinese traditional instruments like the bamboo flute. As a talented young singer, he used to be a member of a children’s choir, and won the gold medal in the International Choral Competition with the team. In this project, Koxui has shown enthusiasm, especially during human practice and experimental work. He hopes to study pharmaceuticals in the future and has participated in multiple scientific research projects to nurture his passion in science. These include the China-UK STEAM Innovative Competition in Robot and YingCaiJiHua in biology and so on. Besides this, he is also a fan of Harry Potter. In this book, Severus Snape was the one he respected most, for the eudemon of doe and the last word, which is also the repeated word: always.
Tanya Ma:
Tanya is also a sophomore studying at the Shenzhen College of International Education. She is such a talented member, thriving in all stem related subjects. She is a hard-pressed physics competitor, from which she won a bpho gold medal. As someone naturally gifted with her "left" dominant brain, Tanya plans to study physics or bio-engineering in university. Just like most people, she loves to play volleyball and soccer, whilst also having a softspot for the arts, including drawing. Tanya has shown particular enthusiasm with the planning stage of this project, always providing fruitful ideas and potential directions.
Wendy Wang:
Wendy is a sophomore in Shenzhen College of International Education. She has a strong interest in biology and sweet foods. One thing that sets Wendy aside from others is her knowledge of many languages. Wendy is able to speak Chinese, English, some German and French! She is a delightful member who can often be found wherever the closest bubble tea shop is.
Yijie Zeng:
Yijie Zeng, an aspiring "scientific researcher", is currently a frenshman at the Shenzhen Institute of International Exchange. He is a rather experienced member, having been to Massachusetts for two years in order to extend his knowledge in microbiology. Whilst his additional knowledge differentiated him from the others, he also connects and bonds with everyone with his hobbies. These include singing and hiphop.
Instructor
Bingjing Cheng:
Bingjing is our team leader and supervisor for this project. Throughout the entire process, Bingjing has put in significant load of efforts into helping our team succeed. She not only leads weekly meetings in a productive and efficient manner, but also checks up with every member throughout the week. As someone who is interested in music, calligraphy, cooking, and watching entertaining videos, members of our team have been able to form close relationships with her from the beginning of this project. Bingjing manages and overlooks the different sub-projects going on and always ensure that we are on the right track.
Advisors
Iris Li:
Iris Li is currently studying bioengineering in Kang Village. She had joined IGEM as a participant in the previous year, thus is extremely valuable to us and for our project. As a teaching assistant, Iris always put in time and energy to ensure that we understand all the concepts about biology, genetics and bioengineering. She is patient with her teaching and understanding towards any troubles we encounter. Just like Bingjing, Iris is easy to talk to and open to become friends with.
Xinyang Xie:
Xinyang Xie was the team leader of iGEM 2020, GZ_HFI, He spends so much effort in helping us constructing the model and revising Wiki during the summer that we have to acknowledge his contribution to our team.
PI
Fankang Meng:
Fankang is our academic advisor. As someone who has been involved in multiple IGEM projects, he was able to share so many past experiences and meaningful learning opportunities with the team. During all the different stages, Fankang is always very supportive and open to any ideas we have. He is willing to dedicate chunks of his time to meet with us and discuss current progress and areas of improvement. Overall, Fankang has really helped everyone in this team and has made close relationships with all of us.
