Barbora Hrnčířová
Field of study: Molecular biology and genetics
Once, I almost set our lab on fire. But don’t worry, I’m a VERY competent team leader.
My name is Barbora Hrnčířová and I'm currently studying Molecular biology and genetics. I specialise in the engineering of protein scaffolds displayed on the surface of bacterial cells. This is my second year as our team-leader and additionally, I'm also a member of our PR and BIO teams. I love stories in any form - books, TV series, anything. I also enjoy taking pictures and traveling - mainly to explore cities with rich history. I have a couple of pets - fur and feathers are the perfect recipe for happiness.
Stanislav Juračka
Field of study: Molecular biology and genetics
My superpower is convincing other people that I know what I'm doing. In reality, I don't understand a thing. No one noticed so far.
Hi, my name is Standa, I study molecular biology and in the lab, I use genetic engineering to teach bacteria to cooperate. I am the vice-president of Generation Mendel so I am mainly preoccupied with team management and making sure that everything stays organized. I am also a member of BIO team and I also help out with graphic design. The term “free time” is gradually losing its meaning for me but when I do happen to come across something like that, I mostly use it to travel and try new things. The life is too short to stay stuck in the same lane!
Michaela Dušková
Field of study: Molecular biology and genetics
I love to cook... I enjoy it so much that one time, I even cooked our bacteria!
Fine book in my hand, a bunch of indoor plants on the window sill, and there is soup-pot boiling on the stove. This is my kingdom. My name is Míša Dušková and in Generation Mendel, I am the one responsible for the lab management and our fascinating online courses. What I craved the most during the covid times were mountains and the library, but to tell the truth I also missed the lecture rooms. On the other hand, I had more time for cooking and strolling through the north of Brno. But for now I am back to my usual routine - get up, go to the lab, go to sleep, and repeat.
David Zimčík
Field of study: Biochemistry - Genomic and Proteomic
I was given reason and some time. Now and always, it is up to me how I choose to use it.
Hola! I'm Zimča and at the moment I am just some pleb among researchers. From an early age, I wanted to become a scientist - mainly as a result of my love of Stargate. Later on, my admiration of teachers and the amount of knowledge at their disposal became my main motivator. I have always been seeking out some big adventure. To my surprise, I've discovered that one does not have to be a genius in order to achieve this goal. All one needs is a dream, a bit of courage and some stubbornness.
Petr Kohout
Field of study: Bioinformatics and biocomputing
Sometimes I work for two… and I won't even break a sweat...
Hi, I'm Petr! In Generation Mendel, I am a member of the IT team. This year I was mainly focusing on our simulations and the hardware components of our project. I love going for long walks and riding a bike. I play football and I'm a member of a scout troop with which we annually organize a summer camp in the most beautiful corner of Bohemian-Moravian Highlands.
Klára Odehnalová
Field of study: Molecular biology and genetics
You may know me as the owner of Teodor the bearded dragon. But there is more to me than my obsession with lizards… I also obsess over frogs.
My name is Klára but I'm typically referred to by my nickname Quency. I'm doing my master's degree in molecular biology and genetics, although currently I'm mostly focusing on structural biology. I am one of the two leaders of our BIO-team, so it is no surprise that our project design has currently overtaken my entire life. I see icosahedrons everywhere I go! I also help out with our socials, mainly with english translations. My holidays are always dominated by summer camps (one with scouts and one with an amateur theatre group - first as a child, now as an instructor), but now labwork has also been added to the mix. I love playing around with video editing, so our iGEM videos will probably be, at least partially, my fault. I am also the keeper of zoom calls and the provider of lizards.
Pavel Kohout
Field of study: Bioinformatics and biocomputing
It seems like such a problem...
Hi, I'm Pavel. In Generation Mendel, I am a member of the IT team. This year I will be focusing on our simulations and the possibilities of using AI in our project. I am currently working on a couple of really interesting projects - mainly in Loschmidt labs. Otherwise, I love spending my time outdoors, the woods are like my second home and I am also attempting to create a small piece of a forest at home with my bonsai trees. I also enjoy playing the guitar and riding a bike.
Sabina Fronková
Field of study: Biotechnology
I love telling people about science.
Hi! My name is Sabina and I'm doing my master's degree in Biotechnology at the Masaryk university. During my bachelor's, I focused on structural biology, but now I switched lanes to mammalian cell line cultivation and vaccine production. In Generation Mendel, I am a member of the BIO and education teams, so you might see some of my courses and posts pop up on our facebook page. Some of my interests are venturing into nature, arts and crafts and also music. I love classical music and movie soundtracks. Being able to play your favourite tunes on the piano or with the flute is awesome.
Martin Flora
Field of study: Law
Law is everywhere. Yes, even in the lab.
My name is Martin Flora and I study law, which at first glance does not seem to have much to do with biology. But I'm interested in the 🇪🇺European regulation of GMOs, which is the topic of our excellence in another area. I think the marriage of law and biology is very interesting and offers a lot of questions to think about. In my spare time I dance competitively - waltz, samba…
Emma Körnerová
Field of study: Molecular biology and genetics
Food is the meaning of life - all you need to do is eat something good and everything is alright.
Hi, my name is Emma and I am a member of our BIO team and graphics team. I am in my first year of studying Molecular biology and genetics, so everything is quite new to me. I've been drawing for years and only recently I found my passion for digital art. However, paper is probably still my favourite medium. Besides that I play the violin. I just love music in general - I will never refuse karaoke.
Matúš Pešta
Field of study: Microbiology
iGEM meetings have only one flaw, they have weakened my statistics for time spent listening to music on Spotify!
My name's Matúš Pešta and I've been studying microbiology and molecular biotechnology for three years now . My main focus is the potential of using programmed cell death of bacteria in biotechnology! In Generation Mendel, I am a core member of our “Slovakian branch 🇸🇰”, which is in the minority, but still going strong! I am a member of BIO and education teams. You can look forward to reading one of my online courses or my other educational content. In my free time, I love being high up in the mountains, surrounded by a perfect view of the Tatras, or debating with my favourite people over a pint of beer. And of course - everything is better with some music!
Filip Křivák
Field of study: Microbiology
To me, microbiology is the real magic: invisible but all around us and immensely powerful.
My name is Filip and, in Generation Mendel, I am a member of our BIO and PR teams. I study microbiology and I have to say that I definitely couldn't have picked a better field of study. Well, to be fair, I might have slightly preferred if an owl delivered a letter of acceptance from Hogwards to me on my eleventh birthday. On the other hand, microorganisms are quite magical themselves - an invisible force, which surrounds us and influences every moment of our lives.
Saša Zahornacká
Field of study: Human biology
Tasty pie is never a bad thing.
Hi, my name is Saša and I study Human Biology at Masaryk University. In Generation Mendel, I am a member of our BIO team and educational team, where I participate in the creation of online courses and our lecture - “GMO Under the Magnifying Glass”. I love dancing, listening to music, reading books and walking around surrounded by nature.
Tomáš Kotačka
Field of study: Biochemistry
Sleeping… My superpower is sleeping anywhere at any time.
My name is Tomáš Kotačka and I study Biochemistry at Masaryk University. I'm attempting to specialize in the art of playing around with proteins. I am a member of our BIO team and I also help out with fundraising. Besides biochemistry, I also love cooking and traveling. Trying out foreign cuisine and discovering the best places for taking a nap is definitely a passtime for me!
Lucie Vyhnálková
Field of study: Medical Genetics and Molecular Diagnostics, Business Management
I was named after the band Lucie as I decided to get out of the womb during their concert.
My name is Lucie and I have way too many interests. For years, I was fascinated by genetics and embryology, but I was also born to be a manager and dealing with finances comes easy to me. And because I couldn't give up one of my dreams, I am currently studying Medical genetics and Business management at the same time. Even in childhood, I loved shooting and later on, I became a certified huntsman. Nowadays, I spend most of my time studying, caring for my two axolotls and with occasional (read as: frequent) online shopping sprees.
František Pomkla
Field of study: Application development
Nothing beats rock music, good company and nicely cold II00.
Hi everyone, my name is František and I am a member of our IT team. There I take care of our website and our Wiki page. I am finishing the first year of my master's studies at the Faculty of Information technology at BUT. In my free time, I'm a drummer in two bands - Majvely and Demodex. Music has been a part of my life since childhood. I am also a Scout and I'm co-leader of a troop in Masarykova čtvrť. Besides that, I also like to spend my time coming up with good meals to cook.
Silvia Mišáková
Field of study: Bioinformatics
I am breaking the stereotypes about IT guys.
Unfortunately, I don't own such an amazing animal like the bearded dragon Teodor - but I'm definitely not scared of Python. My name is Silvia, I am an IT student at BUT focused on bioinformatics. It is my fascination with connecting biology and IT which lead me to become a part of Generation Mendel. In our team, I am not only a member of the IT team, but sometimes I also contribute to PR. My biggest hobbies include trips to nature, climbing, traveling and dancing. I am also a professional in the art of getting on someone's nerves.
Martin Sitte
Field of study: Microbiology and molecular biotechnology
The best thing after a rough day is to take a week off. But honestly, who would be able to bear that?
My name is Martin Sitte and - as a microbiology student working in a microbial bioengineering lab - I am learning how to edit metabolic pathways in bacteria. Just imagine the possibilities! You can for instance teach bacteria to eat burgers! ... Well, that’s not very beneficial or valuable - but you get me, right? I got really interested in this line of research and that's how I ended up in Generation Mendel where I am a member of our BIO team as well as the economics and administration team. You can't do research without money. In my free time, I am practically always doing some sports - be it basketball, tennis, or mountain biking. But I wouldn't say no to winter sports either!
Flóra Sedlárová
Field of study: Medical biology
My parents came up with a perfect name for a biologist.
Hi, my name is Flora and I am a member of our BIO and Finance team at Generation Mendel. I am in the second year of Medical biology at Comenius University with a focus on molecular biology and genetics. I've gone through many interesting hobbies, including martial arts, Japanese calligraphy and archeology.
Gabriela Chmelařová
Field of study: Application development
I am the person whose mind is all over the place in one second and focused in the solid spot in the other.
My name is Gabriela and I am currently finishing my master's degree at the faculty of information technology. In Generation Mendel, I am a member of our IT team, where I focus on IoT - creating small smart devices which work together with biological components of our project to complete our vision. I am currently on Erasmus in Estonia. It has always been a dream location for me because when people in Czechia walk around with short sleeves, here it's still barely over 0°C. My favourite pastime is running in the woods and taking pictures of sunset.
Helena Minaříková
Field of study: History, German language and literature
I like playing with fire, sometimes with less than ideal results.
My name is Helena Minaříková and I am in the first year of studying history and german language. Yes, even people who don't study something biology-related can be a part of Generation Mendel. I am a member of our educational team. I'd like to show people that science is not something scary or intimidating and that you can enjoy both humanities and natural sciences! I love spending my time sitting by the fire - ideally while discussing a variety of interesting topics. When I need to clear my head, there is nothing better than idly walking around in the woods.
