Engineering & Design

We started with a vision: eliminating virulent phenotypes without harming the resident bacterial community. To meet this goal, we designed a mechanism to deliver an engineered cassette to a bacterial population, find and disrupt only the target gene, and propagate the machinery to widespread success. We brought this design to reality by engineering a series of plasmids that can do exactly those things in a lab-safe E. coli model. We also designed an aptamer-based lateral flow assay for the detection of Shiga Toxin. Eventually, Progenie could be modified for the elimination of the stx gene.
