In a small campus with 1600 undergraduates, we only have less than 40 students major in Biological Science per year. Thus, to attract students from other fields to participate in iGEM and create a diverse and energetic team is a huge challenge for us every year. This year, we came up with the new idea of an iGEM Laboratory Open Day, so as to offer and opportunity for all the students on campus to get access to laboratory equipment, feel the serious but lively atmosphere of the laboratory while learning basic operations and regulations.
In addition to a laboratory tour, we expanded our traditional microbial painting activity to a school level competition, where participants can bring romantic to the laboratory by their own hands, and bring life to the culture medium. Started from 2018, we tried to carry on the microbial painting activity, because it is such a good chance where we can understand the fact that microbial organisms are every whare and most of them can live with us in peace, learn basic laboratory operations and regulations, and combine art and science to have fun with laboratory equipment.
To enrich the content of the activity, we showed to participants how to isolate and culture bacteria from our fingers and how to use basic characteristics to identify the bacteria. Then these bacteria are cultured to be our ink. To expand the possibility of art creation, we mixed a little bit of pigments into the culture medium to create colorful canvas.
Finally, it is time for the artists to play. With proper personal equipment and under the instruction of UCAS-China experiment group members, participants painted their cultural medium carefully and hopefully. after only 18 hours, they observe the bacteria grow vigorously according to the track they have drew. It was amazing to feel the power of life at a close distance.
To record the Open Day and convey the beauty of combining art and science together, we made a short video of the whole process to attend the first Science and Art Integration Creation Competition. We are looking forward to obtain a good result in December.
