• Online education platform

Public communication activities are the favorite activities of UCAS-iGEM. Being able to participate in such a grand and wonderful competition, we feel responsible and excited to pass on knowledge and curiosity to other people. This year, we continued our traditional activity of education supporting activities and communications beyond and within the gate. To fully display the talent of the team members, we designed a brochure introducing the past and present life of green fluorescent protein. To help new members to fit into the iGEM family, we set out to construct an online education platform for iGEM new commers-the iGEM Online.

Star Project

Cooperated with Starry Sky Volunteers of UCAS, we participated in educational supportive activities. We went to Hua Ao School every week, finding easy and interesting ways to introduce biology. Both located in Shijingshan District, Beijing, while we are diving in the frontier of science, thousands of eyes longing for knowledge are twinkling in this school for migrant children.

While obtaining a deeper understanding of the knowledge we learned, we were deeply impressed and inspired by the curiosity and desire of exploration of our little friends. We are lucky to be involved in the iGEM community, where we have the opportunity to communicate with different people and spark new curiosity.

Brochure on GFP

As reading material for educational supportive activity, we designed a brochure introducing the legend protein-green fluorescent protein (GFP): Stars in the Ocean-Do You Know GFP? Taking GFP as the main character, we wrote a story of how GFP was found and gradually become a tool that can be used in every field of biology. Choosing GFP as the star, we want to show the importance of curiosity, the unbelievable application of basic research as well as the beauty and colorfulness of biology.

Sending our brochure to students in Hua’ao school

During writing and drawing, we faced a huge challenge of telling a scientific story in a easy-understanding way, which means we can not focus on the interesting scientific work done by Nobel Prize winners, but focus on GFP itself. We overcame the problem by digging the communication between science and daily life, connecting jellyfish with stars, protein with eggs that mothers always tell us to eat more, different fluorescent proteins with colorful paint, we found a new way to look at science, and when we understand that science permeats in every part of life, it has never been so useful

Online education platform

Aiming at training iGEM newcomers in a more efficient manner, we are working on developing an online education platform, iGEM EduHub, where schools are invited to share their training materials and collaborate to achieve high-quality and efficient training for new students.

As the initiators of the project, we have made some prior plans for the platform. The platform consists of two main sections: the curricula and the forum. The curricula classification system is tentatively designed as follows:

• Basic Experiment Operations
• Experiments in Synthetic Biology
• Biophysical Modelling
• Hardware for iGEM
• Introduction to Python Programming
• Programming in Biology
• Webpage and Graphic Designing

The curricula system is based on our own training experience and most of the courses have been practiced in our teams with remarkable results. We are looking forward to sharing it with more schools to help more newcomers and veterans.

The forum section is built corresponding to various courses. Users can communicate around each curriculum and post their own topics.

So far, we have now completed the design of the platform's structure and user interface, and is working on having the website online and functional in the near future to provide a convenient, complete, professional and systematic educational platform for future training of newcomers to iGEM teams. We are also extremely open to all iGEM teams desiring to participate in the construction of this online education platform.
