Science communication
We conducted two presentations at an educational institution, one for senior high
school students and one for junior high school students. For junior high school students, we
introduced the basic knowledge of yeast and popularized how to use yeast for scientific research in
our laboratory.
For senior high school students, we talked with students about how to learn the
basics of biology well and shared some basic knowledge of synthetic biology. At the same time, we
introduced the iGEM competition and our team to them, hoping to promote our program and encourage
more students to devote themselves to the study of synthetic biology.
A questionnaire about additives in perfume was sent to all students and
returned. The purpose of this questionnaire is to understand consumers' views on the addition of
bio-based 2-phenylethanol produced by yeast to perfume and products pricing. These will help to look
for more potential customers.
A teach-in at Nanjing Tech University
We also introduced synthetic biology, iGEM, NAU-CHINA team and our team in the
campus propaganda. Importantly, a set of bookmarks designed and drawn jointly by the two teams were
distributed to students, which will achieve better publicity effects.
Education on wechat official account
In the publicity part of new media, we have established official accounts on
Bilibili and WeChat Official Account platforms to promote synthetic biology and iGEM. Our WeChat
public account is Nanjing Tech University iGEM, which is mainly for students from our school and
other schools that have established exchanges with us. We will also regularly update the progress of
our experiments, including the process of our members learning the biological software-snapgene, and
a series of pushes for "Synthetic Biology Classroom". The promotion of the official account can
increase the interaction between our project and the public, and enable more people to know about
synthetic biology and our project. The suggestions and attention of the public are also the
reference and motivation for our experiments.
A doodle book with iBowu-China
We conducted two cooperation programs with iBowu-China team. One activity launched
by the iBowu-China team is compile a doodle book focus on some basic biological knowledge, which can
be better popularized among low-age groups. Our team drew a sketch of the genetic central dogma,
which was collected by iBowu-China. This educational activity enhanced our communication and
publicity with low-age groups.
