Collaboration is multiplication
-John C Maxwell
Throughout our journey of iGEM 2021 we made stronger bonds with teams all around the world. Here we have listed our efforts to connect with people all over the world.
The following are the events which we have hosted
iGEM Global CRISPR Conference
A mega collaboration hosted by iGEM IISER BPR
This event was targeted to teams using principles of CRISPR/Cas techniques in their iGEM projects which aims to solve local problems, join forces, share their project work and interact with fellow iGEMers at iGCC. The aim of the event was to nurture collaborations, networking, and sharing ideas among such teams. Along with this, to strengthen the collaboration as a long-term alliance throughout iGEM 2021, to be achieved by building a Slack community. Its purpose would be to continue sharing resources, providing inputs, and helping troubleshoot each other’s problems as well as contributing to the present and future iGEM community as a whole. The meetup was co-chaired by Dr. Basudev Maji and Dr.Sundaram Achary.
The event was kickstarted on the 14th of August 2021, With the first day being a presentation by iGEM teams explaining their project work followed by questions from the spectating teams and general discussions regarding their presentations.
With multiple teams attending the conference from different regions, each team got an overview of the variety of uses of the CRISPR/Cas technique.
All the participating teams got a chance to present their project related to CRISPR in front of expert guests and fellow iGEM and non-iGEM audiences.
List of participating teams in iGCC event :
- KU Leuven
- Moscow City
- IISER Berhampur
- IISER Kolkata
In the event, we also conducted a quiz titled “Fun with SynBio” themed on synthetic biology with many interesting questions and prize money for the winning team.
The second day included talks by prominent researchers working on CRISPR/Cas technology. Dr. Basudev Maji enlightened the development of CRISPR technology in the past few years by giving a talk on the topic “Time Traveling with CRISPR: From Bacteria to Bedside”.During the project presentations, he provided several valuable inputs to all the teams.
Sundaram Acharya presented a talk on the topic “The CRISPR wonderland: From an immune system to genome editor and beyond”.
We sincerely hope that our goal of reaching out to people about synthetic biology and the advancements of CRISPR/Cas has been fulfilled. We are grateful to our speakers for their unlimited support and guidance throughout the event and we hope our collaborative achievements will help future iGEM teams to navigate through the process of building an excellent project which changes the real world.
The main focus for iGCC was to bring together all the teams working on CRISPR/Cas techniques and share information and resources. A Technical collaboration of this magnitude would be of benefit to all attending teams in one way or the other.
AIIM
We hosted the All India iGEM Meetup 2021 in collaboration with IISER Bhopal, IISER Pune, IISER Thiruvananthapuram, IISER Tirupati, and MIT Manipal, which was sponsored by Promega. This event was conducted from 23rd July to 25th July 2021, over Zoom. Fifteen potential teams from India apart from the hosting teams registered for this competition (not all of these teams have participated in iGEM 2021). All the Indian Teams came together and exchanged ideas, knowledge, visions of Synthetic Biology.
There were exciting talks by prominent scientists from around the world in the field of Synthetic Biology accompanied by project presentations from participating teams, workshops as well as interactive sessions to get to know about our global iGEM ambassador and had fun with fellow teams in the events along the way.
The project presentation gave us insight into the future prospects for our project from the judges. After the project presentation, our team answered the questions from the judges which also gave us feedback about our project.
We, team iGEM IISER Berhampur, hosted an event- the 'Wrong Answers Only' at the All India iGEM Meet. It was a non-competitive event where participants were given a question related to science and participant were asked to answer these questions in the most humorous way possible. We also gave titles to selected participants. The event was a great success and the participants, as well as the audience, enjoyed it.
Our Program also included a fireside chat with all the Indian iGEM teams, where we shared our thoughts and experiences of doing the project virtually this year.
iGEM Warriors
Rise of The Phoenix - A comic strip collaboration
iGEM is a platform for science as well as creativity. We started our collaboration with a comic strip compilation. Here each team displayed their project through comic strips and all of them were compiled and released as a series over a period of 2 weeks on social media. Further, it was added as a part of our booklet to engage the younger generation into synthetic biology and let the general school students know about the importance of iGEM.The teams which participated were :
• iGEM Korea_HS
•iGEM TEC_COSTA_RICA
•iGEM KCL_UK
•iGEM FCB_UANL
•iGEM ibowu-china 2021

Rice Art
The MIT-MAHE iGEM team was working on a project dealing with protecting rice crops and as a part of human practices, they wanted to pursue artwork where we had to use rice to represent our project. We participated in the event and submitted an artwork as below
Russian iGEM Meet
It was a meetup organised to share resources and information. It was open internationally.
Translation of Picturebook
India has more than 22 officially spoken languages and Hindi is the most widely spoken language. This year iGEM CCU_Taiwan has created a parent-child picture book that aims to teach some scientific knowledge and personal hygiene to children. Our team is fortunate that we could help them promote it beyond Taiwan by translating it into Hindi.
iGEM GO Paris-Saclay Survey
The Paris-Saclay iGEM team had conducted a survey regarding Endometriosis in which we took part and filled up the survey form.
MONUMENT CHALLENGE
iGEM GO Paris- Saclay had started an international challenge in which we had to take a photo in front of a monument in our respective cities and post it in our social media handles. Our team took part in this challenge and showcased some of our monuments like the Taj Mahal, Konark temple, Mysore Palace and India Gate.

iGEM Vilnius-Lithuania
Team Vilnius is working on Amoebiasis, a disease very common in tropical countries like India. They initiated the collaboration with the general requirement of data for this disease along with contacts of professionals both clinical and nonclinical in India.
Both the teams exchanged contacts of Experts relevant to their own project. In the series of meetings, there was an exchange of information pertaining to software design and general human practices. The team participated in the several HP activities conducted by each.
SynVerse Episode 4- Team Vilnius was the first team to have initiated talks regarding possible collaboration regarding science communication activities. In the month of July, both the teams started working on a round table episode for SynVerse. The aim was to spread the basic idea of the projects in the simplest possible way. A healthy discussion took place that resulted in the success of this episode. We helped Team Vilnius to translate their educational poster in regional languages of India.
