PARTNERSHIP

Our most rewarding two-sided interaction was with team Calgary. Our team received valuable insight by collaborating with Calgary in this event, helping us with both presentation and implementation of our project. In our turn, we provided our viewpoint and feedback to the project. Further, we contributed to the development of their human practices part.

Synergy

«We All Need People Who Will Give Us Feedback»

Our discussions started on July 31st when our team participated in the annual JulyGem event organized by them. During the event, different iGEM teams were given a chance to do an early presentation of their projects.

Followed by a questions and answers session. In addition to discussing our project in detail with team Calgary, we also had the chance to get constructive feedback from the experts in the synthetic biology field.

Human Practices
Modelling

One of the key feedback points that we received, advised us to conduct surveys among both dental specialists and the general public.

In addition to the surveys we were also encouraged to take the pH sensitivity of our protease into account.

The partnership with team Calgary has affected multiple aspects of our project. .

- Driving us to focus on various attributes of the proteases at different conditions
- Communicating our project to the community and experts
- Integrating the insight from the community and experts to the project development.

Implementation into Human Practices

Inspired by the dialogue with team Calgary, our team first reached out to survey specialists to get their help with creating surveys that could help us explore the demand and opinion of both the general public and dental experts.

As a result of our surveys
- We found out that one of the preferable forms for our product is spray.
- We were driven by the opinion of dental experts and the public survey results to develop the hardware part of our project and to pay detailed attention to the presentation of our final product..
- The surveys gave us further assurance on how applicable our idea is for both dental practices and personal use.

Implementation into Modelling

Driven by this interaction, we researched on the effect of protease pH and temperature sensitivity. Then, we improved our modeling by taking these parameters into account in the simulations of proteolytic cleavage of SALSA. The results of this modeling enabled us to select the most suitable protease candidates and to bring forward the potential weaknesses and strengths of different proteases.

Two-Way Knowledge Transfer

At JulyGem, we listened to other teams presenting their projects and we were fascinated about team Calgary’s project on electronic waste. This led to discussions with their team members, providing them with our viewpoint on the significance of the e-waste issue and possible ways to approach it.

We filled out team Calgary’s survey about electronic waste recycling to further promote their project development. We provided feedback on how to spread awareness on the issue, making suggestions for potential human practices activities of their project.
