Safety
All kinds of safety problems occur in molecular biology labs. In order to prevent accidents from happening and ensure our health, we strictly follow the safety guidelines from iGEM safety committee and adequately trained every team member. The details can be seen on the next page.

Minor mistakes made in lab can cause severe consequences. In order to make sure all the experiment devices are handled correctly; we listed a series of devices on paper to check before leaving the lab. In this way, we can avoid forgetting necessary steps and prevent danger from happening.

Experiments are an important component iGEM competition. Notwithstanding, lab work has a lot of potential danger, including the pathogenicity of bacteria and toxicity of some reagents. Dangers can happen if the experiments are done improperly. Therefore, out of necessity, we offer trainings of important lab procedures and cautions both online and offline. In addition, we also set up rigorous examination rules to ensure every team member is familiar with lab safety concerns and is able to handle lab work without hazard.
Handling
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
In this year, we use a kind of opportunistic pathogenic bacteria—Pseudomonas aeruginosa Unlike E.coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa has a higher toxicity and infectivity. In addition, the bacterial strain we use is a industrial strain, making it very important to take safety precaution. Therefore, it is really necessary to pay special attention and add more steps when handling with Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain. First, lab coats and masks have to wore for everyone making contact with this strain (either liquid or solid culture medium). Also, we do all the operations inside biosafety cabinets to avoid polluting the laboratory. Finally, we have to add 50% ethanol into the liquid medium and seal it tightly in order to avoid safety risks.
