Safety

Science is a hands-on laboratory subject. We will be doing many lab activities which require the use of hazardous chemicals or equipments. Thus, safety in the lab is the priototy for every person. To ensure a safe enviorment, we have to folowing the rules listed below.

2. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefuully. If we don't understand a direction or part of a procudure, ask the instructor before proceeding.
3. Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the lab. Do not use laboratory galssware as containers for food or beverages.
4. Keep aisles clear.
5. Be alert and proceed with caution at all times. Notify the instructior immediaely of any unsafe conditions we observe.
6. Handle all the lviing organisms used in a lab acticity with respect and dispose all the the waste properly.
7. Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth, and body while touching chemicals or preserved specimens Wash our hands with soap and water aftrt perfoming all the experiments.

2. Dress properly during a laboratory activity. Long hair, dangling jewerly, and losse or baggy clothinges are not permitted. Long hair must be tied ack and gangling jewelry and loose clothing must be secured. Shoes must completely cover the foot.
3. Lab aprons shoudl be woern during laboratory activities.

Handling glassware and equipment

1. Carry glass tubing, espeiclaly long pieces, in a vertical position to minimize the likelihood of breakage an injury.
2. Always protect our hands with towels or cotton gloves when inserting glass tubing into, or removing it from, a rubber stopper.
3. Examine glassware before each use. Never use chipped or cracked galssware. Never use dirty galssware.

Heating Substances:

1. Exercise extreme caution when using a gas burner. Take cre that hair, clothing, and hands are a safe distance from the flame at all times. Do not put any substance into the clame unless specifically toled to do so. Never reach over an exposed flame.
2. Never leave a lit burner unattended. Always turn the burner or hot plate off when not in use.
3. Heated glass remin very hot for a long time. Leave them aside to cool for a while and use tongs or heat-protective gloves to pick them up if necessary.

For our specific procedure

Overall, our lab procedure is relatively save. The strains of E.coli we chose are classified as low risk. There was no acid release or any significant danger that we need to pay attention to. But we still have to follow the rules mentioned above, and make sure the table benched we used is clean. Also, when we slice the gel, we have to wear lab coats and rubber gloves to protect our hands, espeically our wrists, from the UV light radiation.
