Shae is in her final year of a Bachelor of Science, with a major in Genetics and Genomics and a minor in Neuroscience. She is fascinated by the interactions between the genome, epigenome and human development and disease. She hopes to pursue a medical degree and a PhD in epigenetics to work towards discovering how psychological trauma can alter the epigenome and catalyse the development of mental illnesses and other health disorders. Outside of the lab, Shae enjoys hiking, horse-riding and learning to surf (badly).

Emily is in her third year of a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Mathematics and Data Science. While having no formal academic education in the biological sciences, she came to be intrigued by genetics through reading several books, especially “The Gene” by Siddhartha Mukherjee. She plans on undertaking Honours in Applied Mathematics next year, modelling the movement of refugees and displaced people around the world. Outside of university life, Emily likes reading, cricket and bushwalks.

Alex is in his third year of Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Advanced Studies(Advanced), majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as well as Medicinal Chemistry. He joined iGEM in the hopes of learning more about the diverse range and aspects of synthetic biology. He is keen in studying novel drug design combating diseases such as cancer, for example, small-molecule inhibitors targeting certain kinases controlling key biochemical pathways in apoptosis. Outside the lab, he enjoys hiking, brunches and K-drama.

Rhys is in his third year of a double degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical and Biomolecular) and Bachelor of Science, majoring in pharmacology. Although not directly studying synthetic biology, genetic engineering has interested Rhys since high school and hopes iGEM brings him a better understanding of its status quo. He wants to end up working in renewable energy or sustainable engineering. Music is Rhys’ other passion, and when not studying you will invariably find him practising guitar or singing with his a cappella choir.

Simon is in his third year of a Bachelor of Science and Advanced Studies, majoring in Genetics and French. He is fascinated by what makes life tick, and hopes to pursue a research career in genomics and bioinformatics, finding novel proteins to treat a range of diseases. He became a member of the iGEM team to engage with the community taking part in the growing world of synthetic biology. He enjoys reading, origami and hiking.

Olivia is a final year Bachelor of Science student with an interest in computational neuroscience and biology. She came to iGEM interested to learn more about wet lab science and genetics more broadly. She plans to undertake a medical degree alongside a PhD to investigate cancer using computational techniques. Outside the lab, she enjoys powerlifting, reading, and spending time with her dog.
