iGEM2021_BIT-China conducted science popularization activities at Beijing No.166 Middle School
In September 2021, members of BIT-China came to Beijing No. 166 Middle School to give a lecture on "The Growth History of Life Science" to the students of the Middle School Science and Technology Club.
By introducing the students to some of the proverbs related to biological phenomena in life, we open up the exploration of life. With the development of science and technology, life science is also slowly developing. Through the history of life science development, we showed the students some landmark events in the journey of life science development, which laid the foundation for the students' subsequent study of biology. The students listened very carefully and actively answered the questions we asked.
Through a small activity of constructing gene expression vectors, students used stickers to paste the originals corresponding to gene expression vectors, learned about gene expression vectors, and got BIT-China's project literature keychain; through an interesting small experiment of crude DNA extraction, students used micro extractor to extract DNA from bananas and really saw DNA, a large molecule with genetic information.
Then we explained to the students about synthetic biology, an emerging discipline in the 21st century, and introduced in details the applications of synthetic biology in medicine, mentioning that synthetic biology has great prospects for applications in food, chemicals, environment, etc.
Finally, we introduced iGEM to the students and the interesting projects in previous years, which made the students more interested in iGEM and have new ideas about synthetic biology.
After the course, the students actively asked us some questions and we answered them carefully and encouraged them to learn more about life science in the future.
We are delighted to give such a class to the students. And through the communication with the students after the class, we also found that the children have gained a lot from our class, and they are more interested in biology and have the desire to explore more knowledge related to synthetic biology. At the same time, they hope to join the iGEM competition in high school or college to exercise themselves.
