iGEM2021_BIT-China Course Design
Since middle school students have not been exposed to biology and have a weak foundation in biology, our course is geared towards high school students. We consulted with Ms. Liu Hao Ying and Ms. Quan Ying, the biology teachers of Beijing No. 166 Middle School, and they told us that we could use our team as small lecturers to bring a fresh and energetic classroom atmosphere to the students, and that the school could provide some basic materials needed for the experiments to ensure the smooth running of our course. The two teachers also told us what level of biology the high school students were at and what they had learned to help us with the design of the course.
In addition, we interviewed Ms. Qin Yue, the Director of Teaching and Learning at Beijing No. 166 Middle School. She mentioned that the students were very interested in the daily elective courses after school and were willing to choose their favorite courses to study. If we can provide a platform for biology where students can learn the ideas of synthetic biology as well as the methods of scientific research, and understand the process of scientific research through experiments, whether through experiments or research, which will worth expecting, and we welcome ecollege students as teachers to show different lectures and forms for students, who will surely gain a lot.
After listening to the teachers' suggestions, we decided to design the content of our course "The Amazing Science---Synthetic Biology". We formed the following course outline by selecting the interesting, experimental, easy-to-understand and life-related contents according to the knowledge framework of synthetic biology.
We have reached a consensus with Beijing No. 166 Middle School that the school will make changes based on our curriculum design and hopefully enter the classroom in the next semester.
We hope that through this elective course, which runs through one semester, we can bring fresh knowledge to students every week. Therefore, every week students can see different aspects of synthetic biology and gain more interests in synthetic biology as well as be willing to conduct synthetic biology research in the future. And at the same time their abilities can be improved and they can really gain something!
