Implementation
Background Research
Two parties: our research focused on two parties, one was about the professional researchers on pharmaceutical manufacturers and companies, and the other was about the general public.
According to our interviews: L. casei currently has limited usage in the pharmaceutical field due to strict regulations (commonly found in food and supplements).
Ethical/moral concerns
According to our survey results, 81% of respondents were either against, skeptical, or uncertain about GM technology. This is due to a variety of reasons, including disbelief in its effectiveness and necessity along with health concerns. Therefore, the public tends to resist GM products.
Biggest question: what is the main competitive advantage of L.casei and what makes it irreplaceable?
L.casei is the only Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) on the market that has LSEI-2094 removed, meaning that companies can edit and customize it with significantly lower costs. This allows potential customers to become much more efficient in LAB-related production.
Target Customers
B2B (companies such as Bright Dairy & Food Group,Yakult...etc)
People who suffer from gastrointestinal diseases, hypertension, and high cholesterol levels.
Pharmaceutical companies
Normal people who want a healthier life
Product Development
Use CRISPR to target the deletion of some genes.
Cultivation of genetically modified Lactobacillus
Sell technology to companies, companies use technology to produce products.
Product concept: we use CRISPR technology to cultivate new tool bacteria(transgenic Lactobacillus). We license the technology to the enterprise. The enterprise uses it, the cost will be reduced.
We utilized the CRISPR-Cas9 technology to remove the LSEI-2094 gene, thus enhance the expression of foreign DNA in L.casei.
The CRISPR-Cas9 technology is a well-developed method to genetically modify species. In our experiment, we used a plasmid that contains the CRISPR-Cas9 RNA to knockout designated DNA segments in the Lactobacillus Casei. Though it is a well-tested technique, people still hold skeptical calls for it.
To improve, we could have been more precise when dealing with the samples。
Marketing plan and selling points
Increase in proficiency (less lengthy production time)
Occupy multiple niches (can be used for supplements, food, vaccines, and hopefully in medicines)
Possibly reduce high fixed costs (CRISPR is indeed the fastest and cheapest technique currently)
Concerns and Challenges
Safety concerns
Will our engineered bacteria cause genetic pollution? To tackle this problem, it is necessary for us to develop a systematic precautionary measures to ensure that our L.casei. not leak from the lab. Ethical concerns
GM techniques are always faced with ethical concerns, thus we should conform with the procedures enforced by ethics committee strictly to avoid ethical risks. Policy change
We should follow the current administrative regulations and rules strictly and keep close connection with the related departments. Biased views regarding transgenic products
To mitigate this challenge, it is necessary for us to conduct a series of education activities about genetic engineering and GM food toward the public. Whether traditional methods will still dominate the market
It take some time for the new technology to replace the existing ones. Therefore, it is essential to conduct effective competitive edge analysis, based on which tailored marketing campaigns should be done.
