Collaborations

Introduction

Over the iGEM season, the Queens_Canada team formed many fruitful collaborations with teams from all over the world and participated in many events!

Rio UFRJ

Beginning in early June, our team reached out to the Rio UFRJ team as their project in developing a biosensor for testing Dange fever seemed to have a high degree of similarity to our own. Our collaboration started with our teams exchanging and reviewing molecular models of each other's biosensors and giving feedback for improvement.

We have also worked with the Rio UFRJ team to help create a guide to creating chimeric proteins as both of our teams' projects are centered around a fusion protein of some sort. From both of our experiences, we found that we learned a lot of tips and tricks that may help future iGEMers build similar proteins!

Northern BC

Early in the iGEM season, our team met with the Northern_BC iGEM team and compared our biosensor systems as well as our design process for the bioreceptor proteins. This helped our team see different approaches to protein design as well as our overall testing kit. In addition to our meet-up, members from the 2020 Queens_Canada team worked with the Northern BC team as their team is using a vitamin D biosensor part developed by the previous year's team.

IGEM Athens

Our team and the iGEM Athens team participated in a long-term collaboration in which we met periodically to update each other about our teams' respective projects and receive outside feedback from one another. Our teams were also in frequent communication using our collaboration Discord channel as well as Google Docs to work with each other. The Athens team was also included in our weekly newsletter to stay up to date with our project.

Our teams also collaborated virtually in the design of a bioreactor. After much discussion, our teams realized that both of our projects required bacteria to produce a large number of certain compounds, and both of our teams would need a method of cultivating these cells on a large scale.

JulyGEM

Although our team wasn’t able to attend the live event due to the short notice of the change of dates, we were happy to participate by sending in our recorded presentation as well as watch the recorded presentations from other teams.
