Abstract

     This year our goal is different from the previous teams, we are holding the purpose of demonstrating the charm of biosynthesis. After a series of questionnaires and interviews, we deeply realized that the current traditional dye production method on the market is neither environmentally friendly nor safe, therefore we could use the biosynthetic technology to develop a better method to replace it.



Dye refers to a class of organic compounds that can make other substances get bright and firm color, mainly divided into synthetic dyes and natural dyes. At present, chemical synthetic dyes are mainly used, which leads to serious environmental pollution and irreversible consumption of a large amount of energy and resources. Some synthetic dyes can also cause skin diseases, or even cancer in serious cases.


Tyrian Purple refers to a famous natural purple dye of ancient Rome and its successors. This kind of dye is stable and durable, not easy to change color and fade, but becomes brighter with weathering and sunshine. It is mainly made by Bolinus Brandaris, whose undergill glands can secrete milky white or colorless mucus. When exposed to air for a period of time, it turns into a reddish-purple or indigo dye. However, whether through natural secretion or chemical synthesis, the yield is very low, and has a great impact on the environment.

Brainstorming

We had a lot of ideas in the beginning. We once planned to accomplish some fantastic ideas about treating tumors and eliminating ammonia, but after group discussion and introducing our favorite projects one by one, we thought we should get close to life and choose a project that conforms to the theme and characteristics of our school. Therefore after many questionnaires and brainstorming, we finally came up with a perfect theme -- dyeing. Through online researching, we found that purple, the representative color of Tsinghua High School, is one of the most expensive dye colors. Tyrian purple, in particular, was mainly used by the royal family in the past, and it would not be used much. Because the raw materials are scarce, the manufacturing process is long and the quality of the product fades. Since dyes are usually produced industrially, we decided to combine synthetic biology to make Imperial purple.

Advantages

Our advantages are mainly reflected in the replacement of traditional extraction methods, which solve the problems caused by high price, low yield and threatened the reproduction of Bolinus brandaris species. Instead of synthetic dyes, avoid causing serious environmental pollution, a large amount of energy and resources irreversible consumption and skin disease, skin cancer and other problems; In order to increase the yield and reduce the cost, it is improved by increasing the yield of the probable solution of the base amino acid.
