iGEM teams from all around the world have experienced difficulties while carrying out human practice activities as a result of the COVID-19. Every team has done a lot of excellent work in their own way to ensure the smooth progress of this year's project. iGEM promotes win-win collaboration between teams, and under this year's unique conditions, the teams should increase their cooperation in order to tackle challenges jointly.

In light of this, team GreatBay_United decided to collaborate closely with the iGEM team ShanghaiTech from the university track to support the two teams more substantively and effectively.

Team GreatBay_United is really interested in HP work and project design of team ShanghaiTech. Because this year, both GreatBay_Unitd and ShanghaiTech are focusing on protecting marine animals and the new generation of biological materials and reagents developed by combining new materials and cell engineering with the special functions of marine organisms as the core. This year, ShanghaiTech decided to challenge comminuted fractures and develop a new strategy for bone repair. They get inspiration from mussels, a marine creature that can adhere tightly to reefs through mussel protein in an aqueous environment, and we designed a new biocompatible osteogenic glue and name it MIBOM, Mussel Inspired Biocompatible Osteogenic Material. On the other hand, GreatBay_United is dedicated to developing a new, efficient and accurate method to meet the market needs of endotoxin detection based on the principle of the Limulus hemagglutination reaction in order to replace the traditional, cruel natural Limulus amebocyte lysate. After the discussion with the team leader of ShanghaiTech, Surui, we found that although GreatBay_United and ShanghaiTech are on a different track of iGEM competition, our projects' aims surprisingly fit each other. Hence, we decided to work together to further promote our project.

Together with ShanghaiTech_China, we took part in the COP15 Youth Biodiversity Science Exploration activity. This project was jointly established by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment's Publicity and Education Center and POLARHUB to study and practice biodiversity conservation via scientific investigation and rethink the man-nature interaction. This year's project was reported on by GreatBay_United, who also held a lively and pleasant conversation with the participating teams and experts. From those conversations, we gain a better understanding of biodiversity is and give us ideas on how to apply our project to solving current issues.

Incredible mussels

After investigation, we found that most people hardly know about Limulus and mussels, as a result, we decided to hold a lecture together in order to enrich the public understanding. Due to the diversity in social groups between GreatBay_United and ShanghaiTech, we got an excellent opportunity to hold a lecture at Ulink College Guangzhou offline to popularize the connection between synthetic biology and animal protection as well as our projects.

Due to covid-19, it's unfortunate that the team ShanghaiTech was not able to come to Guangzhou and give the speech offline. Hence, they made a fantastic video with a lot of information on mussels and their project.

"Title: Incredible mussels
Speaker: ShanghaiTech_China 苏睿(Rui Su)

Abstract: Mussel is a kind of incredible creature. It can adhere tightly to reefs and people find it difficult to get rid of them. Mussel has brought a lot of troubles to human, they adhere to the hull and greatly reduce the speed and life of the ship. They can also block the drainage pipe and people cost much every year to get rid of them. But mussels’ incredible value is revealed recently by scientists. Mussel has a kind of special protein, mussel foot protein, which plays a key role in adhesion. Mussel foot protein is incredible because of its adhesion ability in aqueous environment. Some scientists try to use it to repair the underwater bridge foundation for its incredible adhesion. But more amazingly, it shows great biocompatible properties in the human body environment. This year, ShanghaiTech_China decides to utilize the mussel protein to be a new generation of bone repair material. Why mussel protein can not be applied to repair directly? Why does mussel protein have the potential to be the best biomaterial? All questions will be answered in the lecture!"

On the afternoon of October 14th, the lecture was held, as we expected.

This lecture had a great influence on the students of Ulink. The lecture carried out by GreatBay_United and ShanghaiTech helps students explore future university majors and career interests more widely, broadens science, brings a variety of activities, and also helps them broaden their horizons as well as understand the biological industry and animal conservation. By attending this activity, students in Ulink College learned about the importance of protecting marine animals and the importance of keeping a balance between advanced biological technology and nature.

Drafting of the declaration

Chinese Synthetic Biology Youth Students' Declaration to Promote Responsible Technology Innovations and Biodiversity Protection at COP15. The declaration was drafted by young scientists in synthetic biology from China. We are inspired by the determination and willingness demonstrated by the relevant discussions at the conference and the "Declaration of Kunming," so we have written this declaration to promise that we will promote responsible scientific exploration and technological innovation in the field of synthetic biology.

In this declaration, we discussed what responsibility we can take and what can we do in order to protect the diversity of bioorganisms as well as the environment. The following link is the PDF version of the declaration,

you are more than welcome to download it.
