Participating in COP 15

COP 15 refers to the 2020 UN Biodiversity Conference. During the conference, GreatBay_United was gladly invited to participate in the "COP 15 Biodiversity Exploration for Youth" held by CEEC.

We shared our project with several iGEM teams, professors, experts from different fields and discussed responsible innovation and biodiversity conservation using synthetic biology. The conference was also available for the public to get to know about our project as well as synthetic biology. It was a great opportunity for GreatBay_United to interact with experts from different areas and improve our project. We also looked at the UN Conference on Biological Diversity's pertinent talks, declarations, and spirit. Professor Guan stated that horseshoe crab conservation necessitates multidisciplinary collaboration, and he was pleased to find that new technologies such as synthetic biology can help. He also commended us for using scientific popularization and publicity to increase awareness about the protection of horseshoe crabs. A draft of the Declaration on the Protection of Biodiversity by Chinese Youth has been drafted based on preliminary talks.

Lecture at ULC

We collaborated with ShanghaiTech_China and doctor Steve from Tsinghua to hold a lecture for 9th grade and 10th-grade students in Ulink Colledge. During the lecture, we shared synthetic biology, biodiversity, and our lives as iGEMers. This lecture was meaningful for both members of GreatBay_United and students at Ulink College. It provided an open stage for high school students to learn more about synthetic biology as well as young synthetic biology learners. Through this lecture, we strengthened the bond between GreatBay_Unied and our peers.

During the lecture, firstly, we introduced them to synthetic biology by sharing basics and development of synthetic biology. Aimed to help our audience know more about these emerging technologies. Then we shared our project for this year: Artificial Limulus Ameobocyte Lysate. Not only did we talk about our experimental design, how it is linked to our daily life but also the conservation of this wonderful creature.

What's more, we welcomed iGEMer from ShanghaiTech to share with the audience how they use synthetic mussel foot protein to utilize the protein as bone repair material. Last but not least, we invited Steve Byh from Tsinghua University, who was one of the participants of COP 15. He explained about the terms and the current situation of biodiversity wich help to give us clearer objectives to solve this issue. This speech by Steve encourages the youth to explore more about synthetic biology and use the power of advanced technology to protect biodiversity.

After the lecture, we also arranged a Q&A section to answer the questions asked by students.

Bacteria Painting

GreatBay_United always encourages people from all age groups to get their hands on synthetic biology. On July 24th, we held a bacteria painting activity in the lab for kids.

Our aim was to combine synthetic biology with simple daily activities to make synthetic biology knowledge easier for kids to understand so that they can be more motivated and experience life as scientists. We used microorganisms that contain pigmented protein to encourage them to make their own artwork, and demonstrated how to work on the clean bench. After 24hours of cultivation, beautiful panting appeared on the mediums.

After the activities, members of GreatBay_Unieted interviewed the kids who participated in bacteria panting, and they told us what they had learned about the amazing power of biology.

Seminar on Introduction to Synthetic Biology

We welcomed 40 students to our lab on July 16th and explained our research to them. We gave a lecture where we discussed our synthetic biology application ideas and how we utilize synthetic biology to safeguard horseshoe crabs. We gave a detailed presentation on our study and explained what horseshoe crabs are and how essential horseshoe crab blood is. We also gave them an easy-to-understand explanation of our experimental design, demonstrating how biological technology may be used to preserve an endangered species. It is also a great opportunity for GreatBay_United to communicate with different people.

We hope that by hosting this lecture, more teens will realize the significance of conserving horseshoe crabs and all other creatures that share homes with us.
