Ever since the industrial revolution, there had been mass manufacturing of products through assembly lines and technologies. Paper, being a commonly used household and working item, had its production boost throughout the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. Meanwhile, as the production rate increased, people soon realized how their actions had damaged the environment.
The depletion of forests and lumber had pushed technology in the direction of recycled paper. However, the technical advances had not reached a level where the recycled paper process is “environmentally friendly” and the quality of the paper is as good as first-hand paper. We are dedicated to solving this problem using synthetic engineering knowledge as an iGEM team. We explored the possible effects of additives sericin and chitosan on recycled paper’s strength and elasticity. After finding an improvement in paper quality. Through Escherichia coli, we were able to produce these two substances by genetic modification. Further experiment and modeling formulated a preeminent result with high quality and spotless paper. At the same time, we developed partnerships and collaboration with the iGEM team of UESTC(University of Electronic Science and Technology of China) via face and face and online meetings. We were able to learn from and help each other to reach our common destination. We also educated the new generation with what we know through seminars and online conferences.
My name is Henry He, from Beijing 101 Middle School International Department. I am currently in grade 10 and will become a junior next semester. I am taking part in this IGEM competition because I am very interested in biomedicine and bioengineering. I believe that my experience in IGEM will help me to have a deeper understanding to my interested field of study. At the same time, I will have a chance to put what I have learned to practice.
Hi, I’m Amaris from the International Department of Beijing 101.High School. Biology is one of my favorite subjects that I can immerse myself in the great atmosphere while studying. Hence, I decided to participate in IGEM to explore more possibilities on learning Biology and continue to put effort and develop multiples skills in IGEM.
Hello, I am Jerry He, from Beijing 101 Middle School International Department. I am now in 10th grade. It is the bio and chemistry knowledge that IGEM contains attracts me. Currently I am in charge of the wiki webpage and I will be participating in both experiment group and HP group. I hope I can learn more about trans-major.
Hi! I’m Eric Li from 101ID IGEM team. I’m in charge of survey constructing and data analysis in this program. I like statistics and education very much, and I hope our program can make a difference for the development of the world.
Hi! This is Steven Sun from Beijing 101 Middle School. I usually spend my free time on the soccer field, and I always find biology interesting as the study of nature and life. I’d love to chase after the question of what makes human being different in this world that we know of, and that’s what motivates me to take part in this competition, to make biology useful in pushing the limit of our talents.
Hi! My name is Margret Jiang. I am a senior student this term. Animal behavior, Environmental science and Biotechnology are three of my favorite areas in biology. I am a member of HP group and take the responsibility of designing videos and posters in my group.
I am Amy Liu from Beijing101 high school international department. I am very glad to join the competition of iGEM. I really enjoy doing research and lab work in this competition and I sincerely hope that our topic could contribute to the environment.
Hello, I am Amanda Wang. I am from Beijing 101 Middle School International Department. In this competition, I worked together with my teammates and I learnt a lot of corporation skills. Also, I have a deeper understanding of synthetic biology. I really like my experiences here.
Hi! My name is Angle Yan. I am 16 years old and now I am in Grade 11. I am from Beijing, China. The reason drives me to IGEM competition is because I am in to biology and really do not want to miss every moment to participate in the biology field. I hope I can use my own knowledge to make some contribution to our society!
