We have been to the meetup that held by Tsinghua University High School. There were several teams to share their projects and experts who excelled in the field of synthetic biology. First, there were two speeches given by an academician and the student representative. They have emphasized the importance and the value of engaging in such a competition like iGEM and demonstrated our goal of this meetup—which is sharing ideas and gaining advices for further improvement. Indeed, we have achieved the target of this meeting.
Next, the teams participating in the meet-up started to share their projects. Each team came up to the stage and introduced their purposes and technologies that they need to use in the project. After each presentation, the professors and experts under the stage gave the teams pieces of advice. We shared our researches and our expectation toward this project. We had mentioned the method and bio-technology we want to use and the further application of our project. The professor has given us a suggestion on human practice. He mentioned that we need to know more about the current situation and technology they have used in factories. He said that we may be inspired by them. He also mentioned that we need to include more about biology, which means we need to go deeper in the research of how to apply the cutting-edge bio-technology in this project.
The last part was the tea break. We relaxed and enjoyed the snacks. The meeting ended up successfully and we all learned a lot.
On July 30th, we held an online meetup with several schools and discussed about our projects. In the meetup, we invited our instructor Tianze Zhu to give every team that shared their progress on the project some suggestions.
The second part was introduction to current process from every team that attended the meetup. For our part, we mainly introduced our preliminary experiment. The experiment we did proved our previous hypothesis, and was our first step in practice. We also presented our project’s introduction and purpose like we did in the previous meetup. Questions were also given to us from other schools’ representatives that gave opinions to our presentation and inspired us on our project. Presentations from other teams were also fabulous. In the end of the meet-up, all teams got their advices with ideas on how to improve their projects.
After a brief conclusion to the previous part, we organized a game for every participant. The game was easy to play with and was a relaxation to all ones after a long afternoon. In the end, the meetup was a success to every team that participated.
