Partnership
Overview

Because of the global outbreak of COVID-19, the style of communication changes a lot. Our team participated in the meetup of the Conference of China iGEMer Community which was held online. The meeting attracted a dozen teams from China to introduce their project design and prompted us to establish contact with some other teams after the meeting.

Partnership Stage I

In April, after the meetup, ShanghaiTech_China knew that our project involved mussels. So, we held several online meetings with ShanghaiTech_China to communicate about the methods to access mussel foot protein. We found that the price of mussel foot protein is overcharged, so ShanghaiTech_China advised that we can access it by expressing and purifying by ourselves.

Partnership Stage II

In July, we couldn’t construct correct and efficient sequence of Mf-5 protein because of mutations. At the same time, ShanghaiTech_China has built it successfully and provided plasmid including Mf-5 protein sequence for us. Additionally, we had several contacts about the protocol that contains protein purification and protein modification. ShanghaiTech_China supported us with some advice about better experimental conditions. During the same discussion, we provided technical guidance for their viscosity measurement of mussel mucin. With our help, they successfully measured the viscosity data of mussel mucin.

Partnership Stage III

In October, ShanghaiTech_China wanted to do some Human Practice about sustainable impact, so we held several meetings about how to conduct Human Practice of industries. Through the discussion, we found that it took a long time to complete fully Human Practice in nuclear power station. In our investigation, we found that there are two devastating problems in circulating cooling water system of nuclear power stations: (1) nuclear power stations couldn’t prevent ocean species coming into circulating cooling water system completely; (2) nuclear power stations couldn’t prohibit adhesion of ocean species in thick grilles and grids, which has a negative impact on nuclear power equipment and daily maintenance. And we also found that there are no efficient methods to tackle these problems. Additionally, we also knew some current situations of nuclear power stations and we offered these materials to ShanghaiTech_China.
