Norr Kauco (Reef Leis)

Size 65 cm x 15cm approx. (variable)
Material – Ghost Net Rope and found objects and resin
"As people are greeted or come together as family for celebration Kauco or Leis made from frangipani flowers are put over peoples heads. This act welcomes and brings people together, the person receiving the Kauco feels welcome and part of the family or group. It re-establishes connections or creates new ones. The Kauco is then admired and talked about. The Norr (reef) is very important to us as family, we gather on the reef, fish, picnic and play. In bipotime (before time) we depended on the reef for our daily food, collecting small fish and shell fish from the fish traps and shells from around the rocks, coral and sandy areas. By making Norr Kauco we are demonstrating its importance as part of our family and times of celebration."
We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the Traditional Custodians of country in Australia, and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to their Elders, both past and present.
