Arsenic, a class of metals that is ubiquitous in people's daily lives but  people do not even notice that it is causing us great harm, has become more common in the environment because of heavy industry and environmental pollution. People are more aware of the heavy metals and metalloids that are harmful to humans, such as lead and mercury, groundwater and soil, which inevitably flow into the environment that we live in. Groundwater and soil, which exist everywhere in the environment that we live in, are easily polluted by arsenic. Therefore, people need to have some knowledge and methods to avoid arsenic intake.

 

In the past, the instruments and methods for detecting arsenic were extremely difficult and inconvenient for the public. The consequence was that people rejected such instruments because they might bring burdens to life and people would think that such complicated instruments were not applicable to the public.

 

图片 5In our interviews with environmental science experts, we learned that most industries and businesses, due to the high complexity of arsenic testing, need to hire professionals to operate the instrument and test for arsenic, which is not possible in the daily lives of the public and residents. Rural residents still use well water and pesticides and fertilizers for growing food. Meanwhile, urban residents eat food with high levels of arsenic and workers are usually inevitably exposed to Arsenic compounds. Our product, that introduced by ASeeker, is a simple instrument for detecting arsenic in our daily lives, and is undoubtedly a benefit to people's lives. Therefore, there is a huge market for our products in public society. Our products can lead people to a deeper understanding of health and chemistry.

 

图片 7Through the web-based survey, we learned that there is a complete lack of public knowledge about arsenic, so our challenge will be to spend most of our time in public speaking in an appropriate manner for the public good, as well as posting on online platforms in a way that will attract customers. It makes the public more aware of the threat of arsenic and arsenic compounds to life and the environment. At the same time, people can understand the difference between ASeeker's products and other arsenic testing instruments, and have a stronger desire to buy our products. This will involve a more attractive marketing approach for our designs. There may also be the risk that engineered bacteria containing exogenous genes may contaminate the microflora in the natural environment. These are the issues and challenges we need to face.

 

In the future, we will do more sensitivity and accuracy tests based on the detection of arsenic by engineered bacteria and consider inventing them as kits and developing derivative functions - absorbing and reducing arsenic in the environment. We will have a breakthrough in the comprehensiveness of our R&D products and take our own share in the market. At the same time, we will donate a portion of the proceeds from future product sales to the world's population suffering from related diseases and to free arsenic testing of underground water in rural areas, so that people will learn more about our team and pay more attention to the impact of arsenic and arsenic compounds on their lives.

In order to reach a wider audience, we have used a number of platforms to promote our work. We have created accounts and sent tweets on WeChat, Weibo and bilibili (a well-known Chinese video site). We promote aspects such as the introduction of the team members, the toxicity of the element arsenic and its compounds, and the progress of the daily team work. WeChat was our main venue. The Weibo and bilibili columns were relatively brief, allowing people to form a quick impression of us and to learn a brief knowledge of elemental arsenic, thus drawing them to the WeChat account to learn more.

 

Off-line lectures

We had two presentations at New Oriental in Xuhui, Shanghai. We didn't get much audience in the first presentation, and the publicity effect wasn't extensive because we didn't prepare well. After internal discussion, PowerPoint revision, and rehearsal, we went to New Oriental again. Still, this time we brought a more neat PowerPoint, contacted teachers in advance and did an excellent promotion job. The second presentation was very successful. Many teachers and students were attracted by our easy-to-use posters and came to listen to our presentation, and the peripheral products we brought were also snapped up. They gave us a lot of constructive comments and sent encouragement and praise. Through our communication methods, the community know more about our project and synthetic biology.
