Inclusion and Diversity: An International Year

The 2021 Gaston Day School iGEM team is a hallmark of inclusivity and diversity. This year, our team went international. We have 21 members from Shangde Experimental in Shanghai, China and Gaston Day School in Gastonia, North Carolina, United States of America. Among them, our team is comprised of nearly half female members, three out of four student leaders are female, and our team advisor, Anne Byford, is also female. At Gaston Day School, we also have an international exchange student program, as students from China and the Middle East are represented in our team. Our promotional video included multilingual narration in both English and Mandarin Chinese as well. We also have team members that have specific talents that are seemingly unrelated to iGEM upon first glance, but make our iGEM team even better, such as graphic design skills and artistic talent. We strive for a community of inclusion for those of different backgrounds, ethnicities, and disciplines, and hope to carry on this spirit of diversity into future Gaston Day School iGEM teams and the synthetic biology community of iGEM itself.
