Education and Communication

As I am sure most iGEM teams would agree, this year was special. The Covid19-pandemic and the restrictions that came with it impacted not only our time in the Wet Lab, it also became harder to find new, original Social Outreach projects that could be worked with the necessary distance and interest people spending their entire days working on technical devices.

Still the iGEM team Bonn worked hard this year to educate our local community on synthetic biology and our project specifically. We visited two Gymnasiums in Bonn – the Amos-Comenius-Gymnasium and the Beethoven-Gymnasium – one in person and one online and told students about synthetic biology and our project. When asked about different problems they would like to tackle with synthetic biology, we were impressed by the high variability of the student’s answers and their creativity.

We were interviewed by GenScript USA and a video of the interview was made available on YouTube. During this interview we explained our project and how we plan it to be implemented.

In Collaboration with iGEM Kaiserslautern we organised a Science Slam on Twitch that 180 people attended. We had some amazing speakers and topics including Anastasia August who told us about thermal storage and Sven Krumke who tought us how Mathematics can be applied to explain dating. Matthias Mader specializes in laser spectroscopy and told us the functionality of a Laser spectroscope, while Lorenz Adlung rapped about the inflammatory properties of fat and Johannes Schildgen explained the algorithm for suggestions employed by Amazon to us and suggested a way to improve it. Our winner of the evening was David Spencer who specialises in the employment of Biotechnology on plants. At this event we also managed to collect roughly 80 € in donations for the NABU Bonn and NABU Kaiserslautern, local environmental organizations.

On the 2nd of July we held a talk open to the general public at the Institute of Biotechnology and Microbiology at the working group of Professor Doctor Deppenmeier during which we explained the scientific background of our project.

Furthermore, we created an Online Escape Room in collaboration with iGEM Kaiserslautern, iGEM Düsseldorf and iGEM Aachen that while playing informs people about our respective projects.

Visit the Escape Room.
