Laboratory Safety
The iGEM fervēre factory team fully complies with the
safety and security policies of the iGEM competition.
At the very first day we entered the laboratory, we all
received a laboratory safety training by our instructor, Ms. Kong in the Laboratory of Xuhui Central
Hospital, where we carried ou our experiments this summer.
We used the laboratory equipped with Biosafety Level 1
and 2 equipments. Our advisors also fully instructed us regarding the usage of the instruments and all the
experimental procedures were conducted under supervision of our instructor, Ms. Kong.
There are several basic rules that we must obey in the laboratory:
1. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment including but not limited to lab coats, gloves, etc.
2. Do not take any drinks or food into the lab.
3. To dispose of waste that might have germs or any
active bacteria, all of the equipment used as well as
the waste will go through the process of inactivation to avoid contamination
4. Clean the table and wash hands before we leave the
laboratory
Project Safety
Microorganism we used are non-pathogenic E. coli DH5a,
BY4741 yeast strain and AQ yeast which have been proven to be very safe, causing little or no harm to the
human beings.
Ethic Concern
When it comes to genetically modified crops such as
maize, the general public has a misconception that it is somewhat dangerous, contributing to the mass fear
of genetically modified organism (GMO). However, since the development of synthetic biology, genetic
modification technology has become more mature and safer. In our project, we designed a genetically-modified
cellular factory that produces putrescene, which can be made into tropane alkaloids.
