Working with genetically modified organisms, safety regulations have to be addressed. Especially with Germany being part of the European Union, we had to deal with these properly and in accordance with German law.

Since we used well-known microorganisms that pose little to no risk when handled according to laboratory rules for S1-level laboratories regarding experiments and disposal, safety risks were kept at a minimum. Nevertheless, we had to make sure all of the used organisms were contained and not released into non-GMO areas and the general public. In order to achieve this, laboratory work was carried out under strict conditions also regarding waste disposal, making sure any waste possibly contaminated was autoclaved before final disposal.
To get a better understanding of how to handle safety issues, we received a thorough introduction to laboratory work from our faculty and our supervisor. General safety guidelines and rules specific to S1 laboratories were covered.

Considering all measures to guarantee a safe work environment, we were able to make sure no harm was done to either humans, animals or plants.
