Dies Academicus

Our primary goal on the day of academic exchange hosted by the Philipps University Marburg was to educate the participants about GMO’s ; how they come to be, and what effects they can and can not have on consumers and the environment.

We decided to put a lot of attention on creating a solid basic understanding of genetics and GMO’s to make sure everyone listening will be able to follow, regardless of their preexisting knowledge in the field. To achieve that, we targeted the relevant topics of genetics and gave a lot of simplified examples and visuals when it came to GMO’s. With the basics established, we then moved on to explaining the role GMO’s play in biocontainment, methods of biocontainment, what happens when biocontainment is not performed properly, and used the opportunity to introduce our project and the importance it could have in preventing bio breeches and advancing crops in the future.

After presenting, we received a lot of positive feedback regarding the audience's experience. It showed that the vast majority of our audience felt that the event indeed expanded their knowledge on GMO‘s and biocontainment, with a more reflected perspective on the topic.
With this great feedback in mind, we decided to use the information and presentation from the “Dies Academicus” as a basis for the “KiJuPa” where we would be holding an interactive presentation just a few days later.
