Collaboration

Overview

As a team that considers collaborations and interactions with other teams significant and meaningful, we BS_United_China participated in collaborations in many ways this year. We believe that exchanging our project and ideas with others could be conducive to mutual improvement and progress. Surely, we have received valuable advice and gained precious inspiration through the process.

2021 China iGEM Online Meetup

We attended the meetup organized by Jiangnan_China, Jilin_China, LZU_China, and SZU_China and had a share in our project with many teams in May 2021. Specifically, we introduced the background application, project design, and cooperation needs. Since the progress of our project of the day was not as fast as other university teams’, we were not only impressed with others’ great work but also received valuable suggestions and cooperative purpose from some university teams. For the first time, we realized how iGEM could push participants to do such constructive and influential projects and despite our relatively inferior academic ability as high school students, how friendly and sincere other teams could be to offer us great help.

Scientific communication with Worldshaper_Shanghai

In August 2021, the iGEM team Worldshaper_Shanghai invited us and other two teams, Jilin_China and BJEA_China, to make a popular science video and upload the video to bilibili, a well-known video bullet-screen website in China. This union of four teams has two purposes: one is to make popular science display content suitable for public life and interests, the other one is to have project exchanges and scientific communication among the four teams.

2021 iGEM Quorum Sensing Science Symposium

Since our project involves quorum sensing, we decided to work something out with other teams whose projects are also related to quorum sensing. Finally, we collaborated with BUCT, Jilin_China, and NEU_CHINA by organizing 2021 iGEM Quorum-sensing Science Symposium.

This symposium aimed at letting the public, especially those who lack the academic knowledge of biology and high school students who are interested in synthetic biology, know about iGEM, teaching them about synthetic biology and quorum sensing, and describing our iGEM projects to them. Starting from the research theme of our teams in 2021, we produced popular science display content that fits the life and interest of the public. We explained the relationship between quorum sensing and food safety to the audience through videos and PPT. BUCT demonstrated the magical role of quorum sensing in human digestive system. Jilin_China demonstrated how quorum sensing works in a new biological mosquito control device, and NEU-CHINA demonstrated how quorum sensing can be used in the field of virus detection. At the same time, we invited Professor Fu Pengcheng from Hainan University to give a lecture regarding quorum sensing for the audiences. Moreover, some with professional knowledge also participated in the symposium and offered useful and constructive advice regarding our projects.

Collaborations with three teams

After hosting the symposium in July 2021, we respectively collaborated with three teams, NEU_CHINA, BUCT and Jilin_China, through online meetings. In the meeting, we both introduced our project design and ideas to find out mutual cooperative aspects.

With BUCT

On July, we sent our engineered bacterium part 1, E. bsuahlscout, to BUCT. It turned out that the E. bsuahlscout was working well as an indicator of the presence of AHL, facilitating BUCT’s project.

With Jilin_China
