Our Team

We are a group of high school students from 7 different schools and different cities. The enthusiasm and curiosity toward synthetic biology bring us together and establish this iGEM team. We all have different personalities and habits, but that does not prevent us from becoming good teammates and friends. Each of us has our own responsibilities and is indispensable for GBU. We might argue sometimes, but we never fight. After all, we are a team with the same objective. Now let's find out more about them.

Team Leaders

Vebe Wang

Vebe is one of the team leaders who's in charge of Wetlab and Drylab. However, she still has fabulous taste and offered the team a lot of help on the artistic designs and human practices. Vebe also satisfied almost all the characteristics of being a good leader. She’s “holding strong powers” but not proud. She connects the team by setting herself up as a model for us but not commanding people to do things. She’s serious at important things, but a friend of everyone outside the lab: telling jokes, singing, and watching Barbie.

Alicia Liu

Alicia is the student leader of the team and is definitely the most people person in our team. She tries her best in all areas except modeling (due to some kind of phobia). She could be gregarious and bold sometimes, she sings in the common room (it is pretty bad) and does lots of silly things. She could be a little brainless when doing the lab, for example, forgetting the procedure or mixing up loading buffer and marker. But she always tries her best and has improved a lot. Alicia is very grateful for having this opportunity to meet all those wonderful teammates and explore the unknown with them together. And she always believes the team can strive for the best.

Group Leaders

George Zhang

George is the leader of Wetlab, and he is definitely the most “Frankenstein” person in our team. The amount of passion he put into our experiment is extraordinarily huge with supporting evidence of a picture of him kissing a gel (his lips were not quite there yet!!). He is also one of the first students in our team that paid attention to artificial LAL and brainwashed (we all love our topic!) the rest of us to choose this topic. George also set up the most beautiful landscape in our group chat with the primary PI —— 10 pages of previous essays and conversations about the most intricate and elusive details of the project.

Vincent Cheng

Vincent is the leader of human Practices and organized the whole timeline of Human Practices in our team. He is undoubtedly the one that makes the atmosphere of the lab relaxing. He always claimed that plasmid extraction and PCR are the traditions of our team and he could perform those even with his eye close. However, he failed both of them and started yelling “I lost my reputation!!!!!!!”. So every day when he comes to the lab, we all asked: “Vincent, is your reputation discredited today?”

Bill Wang

Bill is the leader of modeling in GBU. One time, at 10 o'clock at night, our teachers received a call from Bill’s parents asking where’s their son. It turns out that Bill was still in the lab (not a healthy lifestyle) to finish the graphing of the model. He also took the hardware of GBU very seriously. He spent endless nights drawing the 3D model of the hardware and learning how to use 3D printing techniques. Bill is definitely the most hard-working student in the whole team of GBU, and he did study a lot about modeling and 3D printing to support the team's work of modeling and hardware.

Amber Wang

Amber is one of the main constructors of our wiki and is probably the one that makes the lab “hot” because she’s almost experiencing “social death” most of the time. One time, she found out there’s some new ice cream in our lab’s refrigerator and got so excited that she ran away with the fringe’s door open. Later, her vigorous moves were recorded by the monitor, and the video of her was sent to the public chat for criticisms of her negligence. She was so abashed that she said her actions contributed to global warming.

Jolee Zhou

Jolee is one of the most passionate team members in GBU. As the leader of Hardware Group, she, along with other group members, designed and produced one of the most important parts of the whole team: a piece of reaction equipment that made contributions to both the Wetlab and Human Practice. She is also active in the experiment, participating in and contributing to many crucial steps in the entire experiment. Besides completing her own tasks in GBU with excellence, Jolee helped Human Practice Group to conduct interviews with doctors for further advice in the experiment, hardware production, and user-friendliness.

LyndonYang

Lyndon is the leader of the promotion video and an enthusiastic helper in the laboratory. Working from 6 to 9, Lyndon planned to interpret the storyline of our product from the perspective of Horseshoe crabs in an artistic way. He is like a perpetual motion machine which he undertakes directing, playwriting, sketching, editing, animation, sound effect, and motion effect (nearly all parts of the video). In his view, our team represents the human agents bearing the mission to save the endangered species. (Effective environmental message should appeal to people rather than straightforward critique) As a new lab assistant, Lyndon diligently cooperates with teammates to construct the detection system in our product. Later, he will work to defend our product in an oral presentation (He always believes that defending victims’ (horseshoe crabs) benefits at court is always the key to cope with the hunting problems).

Team Members

Leo Liu

Leo participated in the wet lab, human practice, and the construction of wiki as a group member. During the project design period, his main contribution is the basic idea of how to build up the agglutination system involving a yeast surface display system. While during the time when he was doing experiments in the lab, he always laughed (with no offense)at his teammates because they are less familiar with the lab. However, the ironic thing is that he often turned out to have more mistakes than his teammates who were supposed to have more mistakes due to their lack of understanding of the laboratory knowledge.

Kevin Dong

Kevin is one of the students that’s been most “united” by the group since he’s in the middle part of China (Wuhan) while others are primarily among the southern coast of China. Even the physical distance between our team and Kevin is the furthest of all members, the distance of hearts are not. He did an experiment in Wuhan with Eric and found some exciting insights. With his short travel to Shenzhen, he also helped with modeling and was loved by our team.

Eric Gao

Eric is one of the Wiki group leaders. Living in the middle part of China, he wanted to contribute more about local stuff, and have sth to do with the diversity of GBU(although it seems that no data about Limulus can be provided from an inland city). Although Eric cannot be in the lab in Shenzhen sometimes, he conducted experiments in the “subordinate lab of Bluepha” in Wuhan with Kelvin(KK), together they contributed much to the wet-lab part. What’s more, with a WIDE range of interests: wiki, hardware, hp, wet-lab groups, he participated in a lot in wiki & dry-lab parts: he provided the first sketch of our hardware facility, sent the final draft of wiki pages before we set out to code the websites.

Junxi Li

Michaele is arguably our team's biggest wildlife lover. He has a dog, a parrot, a lizard, a scorpion, fish, turtles, and even some more. His “biodiversity” could also be seen by his attendance in parts like Wetlab, human practice, writing articles in our official account, and even wiki (tell us, what other parts you didn’t participate? ) Michael also held a personal piano concert in Shenzhen Concert Hall before and achieved high rankings in piano competitions.

Yisha Tang

Yisha is the leader of wiki, and she could be seen as the most quiet and inconspicuous person in our team. But that doesn't mean she is inactive. During the vocation, she went to the lab and done work in every required day, fulfilling the requirement then left. She isn't a proactive person, which means she doesn't seek works to do, but she will try hard to do the work assigned. Before she becomes the leader of wiki, she learns knowledges about wiki every day in preperation.

Zhiyuan Zhang

Jason is one of the Wetlab members and probably one of the most knowledgeable persons in our team. His heart for doing the experiments well is well depicted in his serious face in the lab. He’s also the leader of the art group that decorated the wiki pages and provided ideas on decoration, structure, and color style. He also provided some useful ideas in the design of the video and the format of texts in the wiki of our group.

Lisa Li

Lisa enjoys calligraphy and learning Biology and Psychology. She reads some references with her teammates and did some experiments about the topic of artificial Limulus amebocyte lysate at the end of July. She also designed the logo of our team for the usage of Wiki and cooperate with other group members.

Eva Wang

This is a team of high school students, and Eva, as a 10-year-old girl, also met our requirements of being in high school. She’s a 10th grader already at the age of 10 when all the other 10th graders in our group are 15-17. We often joked that we only need to live for 5 more years to exceed Eva. In recent years, Eva obtained a growing interest and concern about environmental protection and food safety, so she participated in a public welfare activity related to marine pollution, which her valuable experiences also helped our team. .
