Meet the Team

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, the SynFronteras team couldn't meet in person and with all members throughout the entire season. But that didn't stop us from working together to tackle this real problem in our region. Below are all those responsible for making BioPank happen.

Giulio and Martha are our bosses, or at least that's how we like to call them. In reality, Giulio is here for us all the time, to every little (or enormous) thing.

That's what a proper team leader looks like and we are so glad that it is him! Giulio brought us the synthetic biology world and invited us in, together. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn't for the glow in his eyes (that weren't GFP) and for his eternal lectures on how we could change the world with these microbes and a little engineering.

Samuel and his neighbor dog Mel are our programmers. They spend hours in the dark in front of the computer programming the mathematical modeling of our project in python.

Samuel is very proactive and competent. He is always helping other work fronts in many different areas.

Matheus and Lola are Wetlab, and Wetlab is Matheus and Lola. They coordinated all the experiments we did and didn't lose hope when some didn't work out.

Matheus is very committed and is not afraid of having to spend the whole day in the lab. All for the sake of the team.

Lucas and Grizzly are designers on the team. All of our team's logos, images, and videos have at least a hand of them. Lucas is very committed, high-spirited, and the kind of person you can trust that the work you ask for will be well done.

Caio and Pit are the unofficial radio hosts of the team. It is not easy to find someone who knows: how to design web pages and at the same time can bring instant happiness with his personality in online meetings.

Rosane (or just Ro) and Soraya are from the humanities area, and in our group they were the ones who had the ideia for the fighting underreporting project. Ro loves animals and was the tutor of Pank, the inspiration for our project

Maria and her neighbor dog Pituca were some of the people responsible for getting the sponsorship. That made it possible for us to participate in the iGEM competition. Maria, also known as the Queen of funding, is very creative and is always willing to help other work fronts.

Johana and Laica are from the biology area but decided to venture into the world of exact sciences. They are very organized and were responsible for finding some parameters for the mathematical modeling of our project.
Avatar
Viviana (or just Vivi), Jasy, and Teo were responsible for our publications on social media. Vivi is incredibly creative, proactive, and a great friend, characteristics that make her a perfect communication front coordinator.
Avatar
Milena and Banguela were responsible for thinking about how we would do the purification of our AMP. Milena is a dedicated and helpful person and was essential to the wet lab front.
Avatar
Elize is amazingly communicative, an essential factor for someone from Human Practices. She and Ud were responsible for our survey about Leishmaniasis and our raffle.
Avatar
Elizandra and Luffy were also responsible for making sure that we could meet our sponsor's requirements. Elizandra is a proactive and hardworking person, essential qualities for someone in funding.
Avatar
Sara and Pacocha (yes, she is an alpaca) helped design our Toehold RNA Switch. Sara is a kind and motivating person who loves reading and taking care of the little animals.
Avatar
Anderson, or Dylon for the intimate, is from the wet lab front and is in the lab all the time (For real!). He and Sam are always ready to help us when we have any troubles in the lab.
Avatar
Kelvinson and Nêga are always ready to help us when it comes to answering questions about Leishmaniasis, providing us with lab materials, or even going to the lab with us. Kelvinson is our secondary PI and does not mind being bothered (as far as we know) with our various questions about leishmaniasis in his Whatsapp.

Marcelo is our light whenever we have any doubt about paratransgenesis or phlebotomines. He is very approachable and from the first time he talked to us he showed admiration and excitement for our project. In addition, Marcelo is a very loving father and is in this photo with his beloved children, Juliana and Felipe.

Cristian is a teacher, archer, philanthropist, plant father, and last but nos least, our P.I. (mentor). He and Nicky are always there to show us the best way forward in our experiments and were the first ones to believe in our crazy idea to participate in the biggest synthetic biology competition in the world.

Agatha and Boris are from the Human Practices front and coordinate the subproject fighting underreporting. She is a problem solver, communicative and organized, perfect requirements for someone on this front.
Avatar
Michelli and Kiara are the ones we turn to when we are not getting something done in the lab. Michelli is smart and organized. She is a great shoulder to cry on, an essential virtue for when you are looking for someone's help because your PCR went wrong.

Felipe was a member of the USP-Brazil 2017 team and participated in the BioTROJAN project. He and Shitake are always willing to give us advice on the design of our circuit and wiki.
Avatar
Eric was the first advisor we invited to the team. Also, the first one to tell us about paratransgenesis. He helps us, especially with laboratory issues, answering questions, and getting materials to work with. Capybara's (UNILA students) blood runs through his veins wherever he is, and we know that SynFronteras can always count on his help.

Julio and Sansão were responsible for making sure that we could meet our sponsor's requirements. Julio is always in a good mood and is a great friend to everyone on the team.

Giovanna (or just Gi) and Amora are the bloggers of the team. Gi is very creative and is always thinking about how to make new stories for the team.

Tiago was also a member of the USP-Brazil 2017 team and the BioTROJAN project. He and Xodó helped us with advice on some work fronts and organization of our team. He also helped us with wiki solving problems.
