We hope to spread the knowledge about synthetic biology and heavy metals to more people. In order to achieve this goal, we have completed a series of different forms of popular science activities for the people from elementary school students to college students. We use different forms to improve the public's understanding of synthetic biology and the importance of heavy metal pollution.



Communication with other teams

In April, we participated in the Five Universities Exchange Meeting in South China held offline by the team of South China University of technology. We had our first in-depth exchange with teams from Southern University of science and technology, Shenzhen University, South China University of technology and Sun Yat sen University. We actively discussed and raised our own questions at the meeting. Relevant teams also gave positive answers. In the process of asking questions, we also gained a lot of valuable suggestions for our project. For example, how to make our device adapt to water of different depths. How should we solve the pollution of the middle and lower layers of water?

In addition, on August 6 this year, we also participated in the South China Exchange Conference and Intestinal Conference held online by the team of Shenzhen University. We gained a lot from the rich content of the meeting. Through this meeting, we got in touch with the team of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University and further exchanged ideas.

We also participated in the CCiC exchange meeting held in Fudan University on August 27 this year to share the project with teams from all over the country online.

Publicity and education

Bauhinia Science & Technology festival

In March, we took part in the Bauhinia Science and Technology Cultural Festival to introduce synthetic biology science and our projects to the public offline. The participants included elementary school students, middle school students, college students, and social people of various age groups. We use different games to help them understand our project and let our participants know more information about heavy metal pollution, such as the hazards of heavy metal, the source of heavy metal pollution, etc., and tell them how to avoid it in their lives Heavy metal threats

In the Bauhinia Science and Technology Cultural Festival, we also received a lot of suggestions that promoted our project.Such as (以后继续补充).




Popular science education for primary school students

Due to the success of our presentation at the Bauhinia Science and Technology Cultural Festival, some parents from the primary school attached to our school even sent us an invitation, hoping that we could go to the school to hold a popular science education. Therefore, we held a special synthetic biology science education special for elementary school students.





Popular science education for middle school students

As an interdisciplinary subject with multi-disciplinary integration, synthetic biology requires a certain reserve of knowledge in order to let people understand better. Middle school students have these foundations and are in the golden age of cultivating and expanding their interests. They are excellent people for preaching. Therefore, we gave a lecture on synthetic biology science education to students of Guangdong Experimental Middle School in the form of live broadcast.

We introduced the basic concepts of synthetic biology to students such as what technical methods will be used in research process, the application scenarios of synthetic biology and the possible solutions to the world's problems. At the same time, we also interacted with them and have gotten their whimsical ideas on the application and development of synthetic biology.

Throughout the live broadcast, the students showed strong interests in synthetic biology, and some of them also expressed their desire to engage in synthetic biology research in the future, which also made us very excited. For us, this activity may be just one of many human activities, but for them, it may open up a whole new world for their future. In order to continuously encourage them to maintain their interest in synthetic biology, we provide our WeChat public account to them. We will continue to provide them with cutting-edge science and answer their doubts.





Laboratory open day

In order to allow children to better feel the charm of synthetic biology, we held an open laboratory day and invited them to visit our laboratory to learn about the principles of basic life science experiments, functions and using methods of experimental instruments. And we also let them experience the process of experimenting by themselves.
