This year's iGEM NAWI Graz team is represented by a team with one goal, to put together a project to be proud of. It is represented by many students who decided to work together with motivation, fun and dedication in every step. It is represented by the next generation of scientists. We are driven by our interests, the urge for knowledge and additionally finding out what the desired future life as a scientist may be like.
One matter which seemed to us very important was help from outside. One should dare to ask questions, because it makes a lot of things easier. This is our way to say thanks to all the help we gathered from outside.
During our journey we came across some borders and realized that a science project is not only about the work in the lab. It is way more than that. It is about organizing, communication and dedication to point out a few. All the circumstances we found ourselves in led to growth of personality, to improved skills and to preparation for the future.
The formation of the iGEM NAWI Graz team started in fall 2019. Right after that the brainstorming sessions brought us through a bunch of interesting issues. One topic was particularly exciting and became a major concern for all of us. So we agreed on our topic in February 2020 and began with digging deeper into the issue and prepared ourselves for the competition. Due to the start of the pandemic in 2020 we faced some difficulties and we decided to postpone the participation to 2021. Further some team members got busier, some left and new ones joined. Despite this, we did our best to accomplish our goal with the greatest effort. And at this point we want to thank all the people who joined our road and simplified our undertaking:

Thank you to all the unnamed but not less important people, who gave us emotional support and made it in other ways possible for us to participate in this competition. Special thanks to the organic farm Moser, which is better known by the name “Kopfing 6”, for the cooperation of the whole project and for letting us take some samples from your fields.
Though there was a steady change of student members in our team, some of us have managed it to the end.
Isa Buljubasic constitute the source of motivation and the driving force during tough times. Besides this, he faced the challenges of Financiation and Sponsoring, while organising the whole team. He managed to differentiate all tasks to sub groups and gave us the ability to see the whole picture in a clearer way. He was our team leader for the first part of our journey, but due to bad circumstances he now represents our project leader by proxy. In spite of everything he was dedicated to improve our communication and teamdynamic and introduced meetings in a regularly way. He was a driving force for field trips and part of the analytical chemistry team.
Georg Blüthner acted as our project team leader and organised almost everything outside the lab. Simultaneously he was responsible for the content of the website and without him the Wiki-Coding would still be in process. Almost as important as this he was our contact person for all the mentally challenging stuff.
Kai Xu was one of the research team leaders who had a great influence on the choice of the issue we wanted to improve during the iGEM competition. Therefore he was involved in the design of the parts of our construct (of iteration 1) and also was a part of the wet lab team during the whole project.
Jernej Juric, the other research team leader and a part of the wet lab team designed together with Kai the parts. His availability and knowledge was the reason for his part as an adviser for the other lab members. Jernej organised the trip to lake Bled and enabled us an interview about eutrophication and testing water quality. Due to his thirst for knowledge he was on some webinars (e.g. iGEM Uppsala), joined the event „coffee with ambassadors“ and was involed in the iGEM EPIC Summer Bootcamp. Beyond that he provided some meetings with potential advisers during the whole project.
Michael Hausegger represented the main man behind the scenes. He designed the website and created the Wiki. Moreover, he could give free rein to his creativity as the cameraman for our photo shoots and for the promotion video, where he was a major part in the video production process too.
Michaela Lang was a member of the wet lab research team. Besides this, she was almost always willing to provide help in other areas of activity but also to criticize if necessary. During the promotion video production process she found a new hobby in video editing and cutting. Further she was involved in the documentation and wiki. She also lead the “do it at home” experiment during the TU-Streetech festival, making the most delicious kombucha.
Daniela Haas represented our allround talent. Whether in the laboratory, on social media or at home producing the iGEM NAWI Graz podcast, you could count on her! She took over the human practice lead and did the podcast preparation, recording and editing carefully and with a lot of fun. (Among the igem team participants of the podcast were iGEM Uppsala, BOKU Vienna, Kazakhstan, Portugal, Leiden and Delft). Meanwhile she managed collaborations with various iGEM teams. Among them were the iGEM teams of Vienna, Go Paris Saclay, Aix Marseille, Tas Tapei, Düsseldorf, Patras and Thessaloniki, Uppsala and Leuven. Maybe you exchanged with her before, because she was essential for the public outreach.
Maximillian Illek was a member of the iGEM NAWI Graz team from the stratch. He stands out because he is a part of the analytical chemistry team in the research team. He did together with Isa the field trips to the nearby farms and analysed the content of phosphate. Besides this he was always willing to share his writing skills even in the wiki.
Alexander Tödtling constituted an important role as our Narrator in the promotion video. He was no less important in the lab, because of his experience in the field of synthetic biology. Aditionally he worked on the documentation and wiki and did his best in the abstract design.
Daniel Habich was a member of the wet lab research team. He was the last to join the team, but a great enrichment. He showed us his talent in organising and structure all the documents in our Google Drive and he designed the template for our protocols. He organised work groups for the wiki and was also involved in the part design of iteration 2.
We took some inspiration for the implementation of the menu structure and page layout from the last years SDU-Denmark team, including parts of the HTML and CSS code. Attributions according to the Creative Commons license
