Part 1 The Education of the Significance of Microbiology and Synthetic Biology

Event 1

Time: 8/20/2021 Position: International Department of Beijing NO. 12 High School Educational target group: All students in Grade 10
Content:
This speech focuses on the experimental purpose, experimental process, experimental scheme, experimental conclusion and future prospect of this project. At the same time, the safety and feasibility of the project are emphasized.
Education consequence:
Let students understand the basic process of gene invertase sequence and biological transformation technology. Let them fully understand the impact of biotechnology on the future of mankind.
Feedback:
There were some brilliant students who recognized the significance of synthetic biology and came up with some constructive ideas about the promising future of this novel field.
Lee: I think this talk has taught me a lot of things that I couldn’t learn in books, and I think human society will be better and better under the influence of biotechnology.
Lu: I hope that humans can invest more financial supports in biological research. We have already seen the United States have a significant advantage in this respect.
Liu: From a microbiological point of view, the idea of artificially modifying living organisms and putting it to practical use is not far off away, and we’ve seen recent changes in the field of synthetic biology through the lecture. Implanting microbes in an artificial gut is a feat, and I look forward to making it a reality in the near future.

Event 2

Position: Shanghai Qibaodwight High School
Content:
In order to spread our project in a wider area and draw more people’s attention to synthetic biology, we had presentations about synthetic biology knowledge popularization among high school students. In Shanghai, we gave a presentation to both Grade10 and 11 students in QDHS(Shanghai Qibaodwight High School) Biology club, which achieved a huge success. Students who listened were quite inspired about frontiers in Biology.

During club activity period, we first introduced basic concepts about molecular biology to Grade 10 students. Students are very interested in the knowledge that teachers did not talk in class and asked lots of questions about it. Then we discussed the history, studying contents, and the future of synthetic biology together. We also focused on ethical problems about synthetic biology to consider about its risks and difficulties. Students actively participated in the interaction part of the class. They shared their ideas about what synthetic biology can do, what areas it involves and concerns about it on the white board.
Feedback:
After the presentation, some students showed great interest in synthetic biology. This presentation not only gave high school students ideas in the most advanced part of life science, but also provide information about possible future career choices for students who are not very sure what to do in the future. We believed that this kinds of presentations will constantly create more talents in synthetic biology area in the future!

Event 3 Official Accounts

We created Wechat Official accounts and Facebook to conduct the education and communication in China and globally. We proposed our inspiration and ideas, shared our project design, and wrote articles to educate the general public about the knowledge of Microbiology and Synthetic Biology, attracting hundreds of people to visit and laern.

Part 2 The Education of Dietary&Nutrition Advice of Se Supplement

In order to publicize the significance and raise the awareness of daily Selenium supplement, we created a threefold brochure, covering the introduction, application, efficacy and utilities of the essential element.

On the first page, we provide and elaborate on some functions of Selenium for the readers, and we list out some potential problems of lacking or over-dosing the element to enhance the public’s understanding of potential health problems.

Then on the second page, we provide some suggestions to supplement Selenium scientifically appropriately. We offer the optimum amount of daily supplement for different cohorts.

On the third page, we compare the content of different mainstream Se-rich food and provide a dietary recipe for the readers to convoy their health.

After the creation, we contact three hospitals in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Shandong, three high-populated area in eastern China. After the approval examination from the hospital, our brochure successfully serves as the health&safety education guide in the Gastroenterology Department and Nutritional Department, attracting hundreds of patients who have relative problems to study.
