Team:ECUST China/Collaborations

United_shanghai_Hs

iGEMer Lu yuqing and Liu yihan in our team ECUST_china also act as the mentor of team United_shanghai_Hs and we have achieved a long-term collaboration.

We participated in their team’s initial project design and are responsible for the guidance of molecular biology techniques. In the brain storm, we came up with the idea to use earthworm and engineered Bacilus Subtilis to degrade the PET which is an hot topic. We helped them building their interest genes and construct the plasmid. What’s more, for we are more experienced in experimental operation skills, we guided the high school students to help them complete their experiment more fluently and ensure their safety. We also exchanged our latest information and high quality resources about the competition to each other to achieve the win-win cooperation and both of us gained a lot.

UCAS-China

The UCAS-China team launched the iGEM online education platform. We have also participated in the construction of this project. The iGEM online education platform aims to train iGEM newcomers more efficiently, better organize and preserve learning materials, and carry out inter-team cooperation and communication more comprehensively. On the iGEM online website, individuals and teams can register accounts, upload and share learning materials, exchange and discuss in the forum, initiate cooperation invitations, etc. We also hope to better promote the education and promotion of synthetic biology and iGEM by building this website. In addition, we also put forward relevant suggestions, such as adding discussion areas to the platform, so that it is easier for iGEMer to discuss experiments or other difficulties encountered.

UParis_BME & iGEMathon 2021

We have worked with UParis_BME for a month——iGEMathon 2021
iGEMathon concentrates on creating a novel online iGEM Human Practices & Integrated Human Practices, Ethics, Research Journal LifeStory.

The cooperation is divided into three stages.

Phase one is a classic involving and delving into iGEM’s Human Practices.Local people solving local and international challenges with other people is at the elemental core of Human Practices, besides we also answering questions ranging from what we think Human Practices is to responsibility in science and scientific research.

In Phase two, we took on the task of working on a iGEMicit (creativity, innovation and teamwork) option, which means we completed a literature in the form of a fictional story——“Search the ocean”

Phase three focuses on iGEM’s peculiar Integrated Human Practices alongside answering questions ranging form "what it is" to "the process by which the purpose, design and execution of your project has you to conclude whether what you set out to do would or would not work to the end desired by you".

This task also recorded the journey of our project. We not only strengthened our team's comprehension of our Human Practices but also improved and bettered it as a result.

UESTC-China & Virtual Yeast meetup

On August 22th, we co-organized a virtual yeast meetup with UESTC-China 2021 iGEM team. Yeast meetup mainly focus on the application of Pichia pastoris and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Participants could choose to introduce themselves as well as their projects and listen to the experiences we shared, then discussed. Since the chassis organism we use is Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we share some of our experiences and the problems encountered in the current project. In meetingup, we also listened to other teams' sharing and got some help.

Istanbul_Tech & Ethics module in synthetic biology

We participated in the discussion on ethics in synthetic biology held by Istanbul_Tech. In this cooperation, we had a thinking collision with college students from all over the world, and had a deeper thinking on the ethical issues involved in synthetic biology. This cooperation is divided into three parts. In the first part, through the study of videos and materials, we have mastered the perspectives and methods of moral thinking, such as deontology, consequentialism, virtue ethics etc,and applied them to the choice of some hypothetical experimental scenes that are difficult to choose, which provides us with a systematic and reliable way of thinking. In the second part, we expressed our views on some ethically controversial biological issues on slack, such as whether gene manipulation should be applied to change baby color, baldness, human embryos, etc. We communicated with biology students from various universities. This let our team look at these problems from multiple angles and more comprehensively in the collision of thinking. In the last part, our team summarized the harvest in this activity.

This cooperation makes us think more deeply about the future development of synthetic biology. In the exploration of biological road, we will always move forward with respect and awe for life.

SCU-China

Our team collaborated with SCU-China through questionnaire. SCU-China’s project is related with the development of gene regulation tools for Vibrio natrivio and we helped them to further develop their project through put forward some opinions and suggestions on their questionnaire. They accepted the questionnair we submitted and we further communicated through email about our ideas.

OUC-China

We first discussed the general direction of their projects with the OUC-China team by text message, and both teams were very willing to seek cooperation. So we arranged a meeting so that the two sides could have more in-depth discussions. Through communication, we have carefully learned the specific design and application of the projects of both sides, and put forward shortcomings and suggestions to each other. OCU-China provides professional advice and help for our shortcomings and optimization of software solutions. We also put forward some valuable suggestions on how the structure designed by the OCU-China project can obtain the feasibility of in vivo regulation, which provides someinspiration for the team modeling work.

Conference of China iGEM Community

From August 26th to August 28th, we actively engaged in the Conference of China iGEM Community (CCiC), held by Fudan University. The theme of this CCiC conference is "Overcoming Challenge", which aims to encourage the synthetic biology youth community to explore new opportunities and solutions from the challenges posed by the post-pandemic era. Several leading figures in the field of synthetic biology were invited during the Conference, including the CEO of bluepha and other guests.

During the meetup, our team members shared our project—Magic Blue, and introduced our team to other invited participants. During the event, we listened to and actively communicated with multiple teams in experiments, modeling, human practice and other aspects to gain experience from each other. Excitedly, we finally won the "Active Participation Award"
