Aalto-Helsinki 2021

Aalto-Helsinki 2021 is a student group consisting of ten students from the two top Finnish universities: Aalto University and the University of Helsinki. With skills in bioinformatics, genetics, psychology, neuroscience, molecular biosciences, engineering, microbiology, and biotechnology, our team is not only international but also diverse. The exceptional scientific work we do is made possible by the unique collaboration between Aalto University and the University of Helsinki, which provides us with multidisciplinary skills, a broad support network, and first-rate resources. Thus, our goal is to create an innovative solution to a scientific real-life problem by bringing various fields of study together for higher value creation.

Markus is a Professor of Biomolecular Materials at the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems at the Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering, and the leader of the Biomolecular Materials research group. His research combines synthetic biology and materials, studying novel biosynthetic production as well as interactions between living and non-living systems.

Sesilja conducted her Ph.D. studies in the laboratory of Dr. Hideo Iwai at the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki, and defended her thesis in November 2014. In January 2016, she joined Professor Markus Linder’s group at Aalto University to focus on biomaterials. She obtained a three-year Academy of Finland postdoctoral fellowship in 2017 and spent a 6-month mobility period at EMBL Hamburg in early 2019. Since December 2018, she has held a staff scientist position at Aalto University.
