Meet the Team
Julia Ashley
Arlington, Virginia
For iGEM this year, I was involved in the planning and execution of our wetlab work. Along with the rest of the wetlab team, I worked in the lab assembling plasmids, and testing for our shinogen genes and overall expression. Along with laboratory work, I also helped out with some applications for grants and funding.
Fun Fact: I have 3 British blue shorthair cats (Bella, Taco and Queso), and one of them has a Facebook page!

I'm part of the iGEM wet lab team this year, carrying out the ex-silico lab-based side of the project. This involves producing the UV absorbing compound Shinorine in-vivo from bacteria and working on a kill switch component to prevent long term bacterial survival in the environment.
Fun Fact: I once hitchhiked to Spain

As a wet lab member of the iGEM team, I have spent most of the project carrying out procedures such as PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, and Gibson Assembly! I have also organised our finances, helped interview experts in related academic fields and businesses, and managed the St Andrews iGEM 2021 twitter account.
Fun Fact: I'm very excited to be studying abroad in Singapore during semester 1 of 2022!

My work was focused on human practices where I interviewed different stakeholders, coordinated collaborations and conducted a sunscreen case study. I also worked on the entrepreneurial side of the project.

My work within the iGEM team this year will be focused on the drylab components, mainly in public engagement and outreach. I am currently designing projects to educate both members of the public, and children of primary school age. I’ve also been posting some Instagram updates.

Yoricka Smolikova
Prague, Czech Republic
Being part of the wet lab team means I have been involved in most of the lab work including growing E.coli, running countless rounds of PCR, assembling the genes into the plasmid, and hoping for the best. I have also been doing research on how to best carry out some of the procedures to suit our lab conditions when it comes to things such as testing the produced Shinorine and adjusting the Thanogen design.
Fun Fact: I have been the tallest rugby player on the WRFC St Andrews team since 2018.
Weston Tuescher
San Francisco, California
I will be focusing on the dry lab side of the project, in particular the wiki. I will be working on designing how we present our project and combining the dry lab work with wet lab work on the wiki.
